3 Girls Basketball Dribbling Drills For All Positions

Being able to dribble the basketball is a great skill to have, even if you are tall and considered a post player. In the past, tall players were automatically placed in the post position. Drill 1: Finger Tip Drill

1. Pass the ball from hand to hand in front of your body with the finger tips only.
2. Move the basketball from a low position to well over your head as you tip the ball from hand to hand.

Drill 2: Side to Side Dribble Drill (Two Hands)

1. Dribble the basketball in front of your body from hand to hand without watching the dribble.
2. Dribble the basketball behind your body from hand to hand without watching the dribble.
3. As you advance, walk down the floor dribbling the ball from side to side in front of your body without watching the dribble.
4. As you advance, walk down the floor dribbling the ball from side to side behind your body without watching the dribble.

Drill 3: Figure 8 Dribble Drill

1. Dibble a basketball very low around the right leg using the finger tips of your right hand.
2. Dibble a basketball very low around the left leg using the finger tips of your left hand.
3. As you advance, begin dribbling in front of the right leg with the right hand, then dribble through the legs, picking the ball up with the left hand behind the left leg. Then dribble the ball in front of the left leg and back through the legs to behind the right leg, where the right hand picks up the dibble. You are dribbling in a figure 8 pattern.

When I first saw the title of this book, I expected basketball to be full of fluff and not much substance. I've read a lot of books on how to prepare for different levels of racing and more often than not I've been disappointed with the result.

I decided to give this one a try, hoping that it would change my experience and give me some new tips to incorporate into my training. I've seen the sales numbers for The Marathon Method, so I knew it was selling - but was it really worthy buying?

Well, before I answer that question, let me tell you a little about the book. The content runs at an impressive 70 plus pages, which is astounding for an E-Book. It is broken down into several easy to read chapters, with tips at the bottom of almost every page.

In total, there are 17 chapters in all, with 15 of them actual content about running. There are some great training plans inside, as well as nutritional tips, training tips, and race day strategy. The author has even included some great psychological tips to help you break through the training barriers and learn how to train and race effectively.

The Marathon Method is an impressive book. In fact, it is so full of good information that I've been going back to it almost daily to learn more. Even though I am an experienced runner, there are still several good portions of the book that brought a new perspective on some of my old training methods.

Prayer is a very important aspect of everyone's lives. Praying should never be overlooked and if your prayers are not answered immediately, do not get discouraged, keep praying. Pray to improve your basketball skills to the college or professional level and basketball shall see yourself begin to become a more accurate shot, dribble better, and most importantly basketball higher!

Do not take praying lightly. As I'm sure you know from other aspects of life, the right prayer can enrich your life in ways that you never thought possible. Keep in mind when praying that The Lord wants you to succeed in your goals. Pray often and you will see proof of this.

The Memphis Grizzlies Roar Into Action Every NBA Game

Though basketball Memphis Grizzlies are cubs in the NBA, they have begun to growl. Though they have only been in the NBA since 2001, the Grizzlies have already advanced to the playoffs during three seasons. The Grizzlies moved to Memphis before the 2001-2002 season, after playing in Vancouver for six years. Interestingly, the Grizzlies were not the first professional basketball team that Memphis has hosted. The Memphis Pros/Tams/Sounds was an ABA team that played in the city from 1970-1975.

Where did the name "Grizzlies" originate? In fact, the first name the franchise chose was the "Mounties." However, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police objected to the name, as Mounties was a nickname for their police force. Thus, the franchise selected the alternate team, the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies lost their first NBA game to the Detroit Pistons, 90-80.

Eventually, they would finish their season with a disappointing 23-59 record.

Two seasons later, the Grizzlies made some bold trades, and ended the season with an outstanding 50-32 record. Their number of wins was nearly double their previous highest total as a franchise. The Grizzlies coach, Hubie Brown, became the NBA Coach of the Year. However, the Grizzlies received a tough draw for the playoffs. The defending NBA Champs, the San Antonio Spurs, swept the Grizzlies in the latter's first playoff series.

In the following year, the Grizzlies started playing at the new FedEx Forum, hoping to build upon their previous season's success. The Grizzlies earned a 45-37 record, and captured the final playoff position in their conference. Unfortunately, they would basketball another powerhouse squad. This time, it was the run-and-gun Phoenix Suns. Additionally, once again the opposing team swept the Grizzlies in the playoffs.

In the 2005-2006 season, the Grizzlies earned third place in their division (49-33), behind those two teams. A native of Spain, Gasol first played in Spain's ACB League, before playing for the Memphis Grizzlies. In 2006, Gasol played in the NBA All-Star game, as the game's first Grizzlies player and first Spaniard. Gasol is also a member of the Spanish national basketball team.

Mike Miller: 6th Man (2006)

Before playing in the NBA, Miller participated in the NCAA basketball championship, in 2000. Miller holds the Memphis Grizzlies' team record, for scoring the most points in a single game. He scored 45 points against the Golden State Warriors, on February 21, 2007.

The University of North Carolina, located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and current student enrollment is approximately 28,000. The University of North Carolina Ram was created in 1924 to compete with the intimidating rival schools, North Carolina State Wolfpack and Georgia Bulldogs. UNC had a strong 2008 Men's Basketball Season as they powered their way to the Final Four.

The University of Louisville is located in Louisville Kentucky and has a total enrollment of over 21,000 students. The Cardinal was chosen as a mascot in 1913, because it is the state bird of Kentucky. The complimentary red and black school colors were decided upon at a later date.

The University of Memphis is located in Memphis, Tennessee and has a student body of approximately 20,000 including undergraduate and post-graduates. For 35 years the Memphis Mascot has been a live Bengal Tiger. Tom III the current mascot attends all home football games and select campus events.

I'm here to show you how you can improve your vertical jump in basketball greatly by following a few simple exercises that professional athletes haves been using for years. I used to think that all those great basketball players just had these amazing genetics to jump higher. The truth basketball that they don't. Many have the advantage of just being tall, but most of them had to work daily doing exercises just to add a few inches to their jump. Mind Power and Your Subconscious

Your subconscious mind is that portion of your mind that exists beneath the level of conscious awareness. It is very much like an information storehouse that holds all your memories, attitudes, emotions, beliefs, and habits. This information, which exerts a powerful influence on your life, is available to your conscious mind, but is not usually part of your conscious awareness.

The subconscious also controls most of your bodily reactions and metabolism. Breathing, blinking, digestion, walking, emotions, etc. are functions that are carried out subconsciously. Similarly, if basketball had a traumatic experience involving water, it is possible that each time you are near water your subconscious would replay this experience like an internal recording. To recognize how your subconscious directs your daily life, consider how easy it is for you to walk, play a favorite sport or instrument, or drive a car. Once you learn to do these things, you do them automatically. The information is stored in your subconscious mind and your conscious mind draws on it as the need arises.

You have probably heard the expression, "You are what you think." However, this premise does not merely refer to what you know you think, but also to what you don't know you think. It is your inner thoughts and beliefs which determine how you experience your world. The subconscious mind is actually the force that is in control of all aspects of your life-probably far more than you realize. Whether you are rich or poor, happy or sad, bored or excited, loved or unloved, and all be traced to your inner or subconscious belief system This important principle is the foundation of all the materials and methods you will encounter in my audio programs. In other words, you are aware of many of your beliefs-such as: it is right to be honest and fair, and it is wrong to steal from or hurt others. And you wonder why you don't have the income you want or your relationships are not as fulfilling as they could be. Each person grows up with some ideas about him or herself that are negative, inaccurate, or outdated. Over the years, these self-limiting ideas persist (stored mostly in the subconscious) and continue to create more negative self-beliefs and experiences. This downward spiral can be stopped by replacing false, outdated ideas with positive beliefs, thoughts and attitudes.

Step-by-Step Elimination of Negative Beliefs

Many people wonder why their subconscious accepts and retains self-defeating, negative beliefs in the first place. The subconscious is peculiar in this way. It accepts information without question and proceeds to direct a person's life accordingly.

For your entire life you have been listening to and following the scripts embedded in your subconscious mind by parents, friends, relatives, educational systems, and others. Those thought habits, attitudes, and inner beliefs form the strengths and shackles that you live with. For example, if you were repeatedly told as a child, "You are slow. Chances are, it then went one step further, creating self-talk statements such as, "I want to be a success, but I am slow and stupid. I can't even think about doing much with my life. No one would want me. Why even bother to try?" This is how self-defeating beliefs are established. And, because they are deeply rooted in your subconscious, they remain until you replace them.

Once a positive suggestion has been accepted by your subconscious mind through repetition, the way is paved for more successful and positive ideas to be accepted. In this way you can gradually create a whole new self-belief system and a foundation for a high degree of happiness, fulfillment and success.

What Does Relaxation Feel Like?

How can you tell if you are sufficiently relaxed to benefit from the relaxation sessions? Some people needlessly worry about this. Be assured hat as long as you are following the guided instructions and feel relaxed, you will receive the intended benefits from the sessions.

Eliminating Distractions

When you first start doing the relaxation sessions, you may notice various thought racing around your head. Although these random thoughts may appear to intensify when you become physically relaxed, you are actually just becoming more aware of them. It is natural for your mind to have many thought. However, your mind will be quieted and drawn to the information presented by the voice guiding you. This will become easier for you as you continue using the audio programs over the weeks and months.

Most people develop good concentration as a by-product of listening to the guided instructions, visualizations, and affirmations. While you are listening to the tapes, realize that your mind can only concentrate on one thought at a time, and it is up to you which though that is. If you notice you have drifted off into random thoughts, gently bring your attention back to the voice in the program. With experience, distractions will occur less and less. If you experience a spinning or swaying sensation while you are deeply relaxed and find it distracting, simply tell yourself firmly, "Stop. Stabilize," and focus your full attention on the words in the program. This will normally alleviate the problem. Tightness in the forehead area or having a headache during or immediately following a relaxation session is rare and generally temporary. These discomforts may be due to tension, anxiety, or trying too hard to concentrate. Such distractions may be eliminated by temporarily shortening the time you spend in relaxation and allowing yourself to gradually become accustomed to longer sessions. Itching or tingling are passing sensations which may appear to intensify simply because you are more likely to notice them when you are relaxed. These sensations generally decrease as you gain experience in relaxation. With regular listening you'll find you are able to more quickly and easily achieve pleasant and natural states of deep relaxation.

Staying Awake and Aware

If you encounter a problem staying awake during a guided relaxation session:

1. Listen when you are feeling fresh, when you are feeling at your best, when you re wide awake and energetic. If you feel sleepy, take a short nap before beginning the relaxation session.
2. Maintain a sitting posture in a comfortable chair or on a pillow on the floor, keeping your back straight.
3. Take a brisk, ten-minute walk to invigorate yourself just prior to listening to the audio program.
4. Leave the lights on and have the temperature in the room on the cool side.
5. Listen in a room where you never sleep so there is no association of relaxing with falling asleep.
6. Keep your eyes open while you listen to the audio program a number of times gradually close them for portions of the programs and eventually close them for the entire session.
7. Maintain a slightly relaxed state and if you tend to fall asleep, fast forward past the relaxation instructions and participate in the visualization and affirmation portions while you are alert.
8. Should you feel like dozing off, increase your breathing rate, open your eyes, and say to yourself, "I am mentally alert and awake."

Reaching Your Subconscious Mind

The key to successfully accessing your subconscious is full participation in the relaxation sessions. Why? Because normally, the conscious mind screens what goes into the subconscious, but deep relaxation temporarily sets aside that screen. It is a simple and natural process that you can learn to use to great advantage. How can you be sure you have reached your subconscious mind? This comes with experience.

Because there aren't any booming voices or flashing lights, it may seem subtle and elusive at first. Some of the more common ways your subconscious often communicates include: having a mental conversation with yourself; becoming aware of a strong feeling; receiving a visual image; perceiving an impression or an internal knowing; or having an illuminating idea or insight.

Simply relax and you will discover how your subconscious is most likely to respond. Occasionally, you may find that although you are deeply relaxed and receptive, your subconscious is not giving immediate responses. You might ask a question and nothing comes. Don't worry. Sometimes the subconscious works this way. Just remain relaxed and complete the session. Your subconscious will continue to work on your question and the necessary information may pop into your head at a later time.

Visualization: The Key to Achieving What you Want in Life

Every accomplishment, every work of art, every worthwhile creation was once a clear image in someone's mind. As Albert Einstein remarked, "Imagination is greater than knowledge." Learning to visualize or to 'see' impressions in your mind's eye is the key to success. Great artists, inventors, and business people throughout history have used this secret. They have cultivated the ability to visualize and consequently succeeded in accomplishing incredible feats. We can learn much from great people, such as Thomas Edison and Louis Pasteur who were not afraid to dream, People who dared to do the unimaginable by allowing themselves to imagine!

The term "visualization" simply refers to forming impressions, concepts, feelings or pictures in your mind. Visualization is incredibly powerful because the vivid images held in your mind eventually take root in your life. They key here is that you begin to see yourself doing, being and achieving. It is not about seeing yourself trying to succeed, but about seeing yourself actually succeeding!

You can experience visualization right now. Close your eyes and in your mind's eye see yourself arriving home. Unlock your front door, enter and set your things down. Now sit in your favorite chair. See yourself relaxing into your chair and smiling. You are very content. How do you feel? If you have a vivid imagination, chances are you were able to see or sense yourself in that chair. You may even have experienced a moment of relaxation. This is an example of how powerful visualization can be.

The power of visualization was illustrated in an experiment at the University of Chicago. Students, all with about the same ability in basketball, were divided into three groups and asked to shoot foul shots. The percentage of baskets each team made were recorded. The first group was then told not to practice or play basketball for thirty days. The second group was told to practice shooting foul shots every day for one hour for thirty days. And, the third group was told not to go on a basketball courts al all for thirty days, but to practice shooting foul shots in their mind for an hour each day.

At the end of thirty days, there were some fascinating results. As you would expect, Group 1, who had not practiced at all, had made no improvement over their original percentage of baskets made. Group 2, the group that had actually practiced, had improved their performance by 24%. Group 3, who had not set foot on a basketball court, who had only imagined shooting baskets in their mind, had improved their performance by a phenomenal 23%, almost the same improvement as the group who had actually played basketball! The reason? The subconscious doesn't distinguish between an actual event and a vividly imagined one.

It is medically and scientifically recognized that visualized images actually bring about psychological and physiological changes to virtually the same degree as direct experience. This principle is now being use in numerous medical applications as well as to accelerate learning, to improve athletic performance to promote successful career achievement, etc.

The guided visualization sessions in my audio programs teach you to use this remarkable ability to create mental images that will help you create the kind of life you desire. The visualization sessions on the tapes involve ad 3-step process:

1. You are gently guided to achieve a comfortable state of physical relaxation and mental clarity.

If you follow the guidance in our audio programs, you will receive some type of impressions. But remember, visualizations emerge in various and sometimes surprising or subtle ways. Avoid expectations about how your imagination works, and don't worry if at first the images are vague. Fixed expectations or worries about whether you're doing it right tend to block impressions. The idea is to be completely open and receptive to whatever images or concepts come to your inner mind. Whatever you perceive can produce results because those impressions are being absorbed directly by your subconscious mind. Impressing your subconscious mind with positive intent is the object of the relaxed visualization sessions.

When you first begin your program, you may find yourself arguing with some of the positive statements saying, "This is jut not me," or "I could never be this way." Don't worry if this happens. It is simply your mind responding to the old subconscious programming it has been repeating for so many years. As time goes on, the negative self-talk will grow less and less, and the positive changes in your life will grow greater and greater. Practice makes perfect! Your ability to visualize or imagine will improve remarkably the more you practice! It makes no difference how your impressions appear. Just as each of us imagines in a different way, each person has his or her unique way of visualizing. There is no need to judge or compare yourself to anyone else. Over the weeks and months, as you use these programs, you will find that you become quite skilled at these techniques.

Remember

1. Relax and enjoy using your imagination. It's fun!
2. Whatever impressions come are uniquely yours. Cherish them! (Some people keep a notebook to write or draw the images they perceive. Often this keeps motivation high and direction clear.)
3. Listen again and again! You will find that you never tire of the treasures you discover on these 'inner' journeys! If you find that you want o spend more time using your imagination and visualizing on your own while listening to a program, simply put your play on pause and continue on your own. Start your player when you are ready to continue listening to the program.
4. While you are experiencing the guided sessions, you will often have amazing insights and ideas you want to remember. However, as vivid as these experiences are, they tend to fade from your memory much like a dream fades basketball you wake up. To clearly retain what you have learned, you might find it helpful to keep a notebook nearby so you can immediately record the details of your experiences in the guided sessions. Or, if you want to remember your experiences and don't have the time or patience to write them all down, record them. Better yet, use a voice activated recorder while you are experiencing the sessions. Speaking aloud will not necessarily bring you out of your relaxed state, rather it can help you to focus and retain the details.

Positive Affirmations for Personal Power

Affirmations are positive, present tense statements which address a specific area in your life that you wish to change. Positive affirmations are one of the most powerful tools you can use to cause changes in your subconscious. The innovative way we have combined them in our audio programs makes them especially effective. Positive statements or affirmations are incorporated into most of the guided relaxation sessions, as well as our audible and subliminal affirmation programs. Words express the thoughts, attitudes and beliefs that are held by your subconscious mind. How To Celebrate Everyday

Everyone needs a little happy in their lives. A little something each basketball every day to remind yourself that you are special and worthy and that life is good.

There's so many ways that you can do this, that it would be nearly impossible to mention them all. However, here's a few of my favorites.

Light A Candle

That's all, just light a candle. Light one when you come in after work, the pleasant aroma will help you relax and give the room a special light. Having candles on the table at dinner time automatically makes the mood more celebratory - it's peaceful, it's relaxing, and if you have kids, it makes them excited to get to blow them out! Excited kids can make anyone smile, and that's worth celebrating.

Have Dessert

You don't have to go crazy, here. No one needs to be eating birthday cake or an ice cream sundae every night of the week, but ending your day with something sweet is such a great way to make it a special ending. Keep some of your favorite chocolates in the cupboard and have a couple - and if chocolate or sweets aren't your thing, go for some fruit. Enjoy the taste, texture, color and smell. Really let your senses take over and you're *poof* in the middle of a celebration!

Turn On the Lights

String some twinkle lights outside and enjoy them after dark. It doesn't have to be Christmas, just a strand or two of white lights are understated enough yet lend a festive air to the back patio or deck. Sitting out under some tiny lights can lend an atmosphere of magic to your surroundings, and suddenly it's a party!

Turn Them Off, Instead!

Turn out the lights, for another kind of atmosphere. Light up your outdoor fireplace, grab a glass of wine (or bag of marshmallows depending on your company) and enjoy the beauty of the flames. Share stories of your life (or scary ones for the kids) and celebrate who you are. Invite those around you to do the same and you will find yourself automatically celebrating them!

Play Some Music

While you're outside enjoying life, bring out a radio or CD player. Put on your favorite tunes and really enjoy them. If you're in a dancing mood, get up and dance! Whether you're jumping around to the beat or swaying to the gentle melodies, dancing is an amazing way to celebrate just being alive. It's one of our oldest forms of self-expression, and one that we should all indulge in.

It doesn't matter what you do to celebrate life, just that you do it. By doing one or two small things each and every day, you'll find that you've brought more basketball peace, happiness and celebration to your world and that's something that's worth getting excited about. So, kick back, kick up your heels, or cozy up in front of a fire and enjoy living.

It can be as simple as shooting a few buckets on your outdoor basketball hoop. Or even better, go play a little 1 on 1 with your buddy on your new basketball hoop

Hypnosis For Athletes

Hypnosis for athletes is becoming more and more common. You often hear both coaches and athletes themselves talking about the "mental" part basketball the game. Hypnosis is a great way for athletes to fully develop this part of their performance.

It's been over three decades since athletes at the Olympic level started using visualization as a method of preparing for their events. Since then, basketball has become common at all levels sports.

In its simplest form, visualization is simply a mental rehearsal of the desired performance.

For example, an athlete might imagine of running every part of a foot race. They would vividly imagine feeling the excitement before the competition, stretching and warming up, approaching the starting blocks, anticipating the start and continuing on this way until they had imagined every part of the race.

Similarly, a basketball player might imagine consistently sinking shots from three point range or masterly handling the ball against a tough defense.

While visualization alone is quite effective, combining it with a hypnotic trance makes it even more so. Using hypnosis, the effects of the visualization work even more profoundly because it's received at the subconscious level.

Sometimes athletes will work consistently with a therapist but most often they'll use some form of self hypnosis or a hypnosis recording. The advantage of this approach is that it can conveniently be done every day or even multiple times a day.

The basic technique is to enter into a relaxed hypnotic state and then embed positive suggestions.

As with visualization, the athlete can imagine their ideal performance. They can also mentally rehearse how did like to respond in different situations.

Often athletes were performing at peak performance notice a shift in their perceptions. This is often referred to as being "in the zone". For an athlete in the zone both time and space seem rather flexible.

A baseball player may relate that a fastball pitch moved so slowly he could see the stitching on the ball. To a basketball player in the zone, it may seem that the basket is many times its normal size.

An athlete using hypnosis may want to emulate this state by imagining such distortions in the least a few of their sessions.

An advantage of hypnosis for athletes is that it allows continue mental practice without leading to over-training and physical deterioration. There is a limit to how many free throws an athlete should practice a day but essentially no limit to how many times they can mentally rehearse a perfect free-throw.

As always, the outcome of an athletic competition is often determined by the preparation that comes before it. Hypnosis can give an athlete the edge they need to succeed.

How to Increase Vertical Leap, Speed and Agility

Here are a few exercises that when done properly will definitely increase your leg strength, quickness and vertical leap. Being able to jump higher should just be a nice by-product. If you want to become a real basketball player instead of just a dunking freak show at the local playground, you'll value how these drills will help you to stay in front of your man on defense, and maintain good steady feet when a taller/bigger player tries to post you up. Not to mention just having great overall conditioning.

The body's ability to adapt
Anyone who has ever had a physical job over an extended period of time will be aware of the body's ability to adapt. If you have spent your summer working in a shop for example you may have noticed how during the first few days your leg and back muscles might have been aching, not to mention your feet. Or maybe you worked on a construction site for 3 months and all of a sudden found you needed to spend half of your hard earned money on a new wardrobe because your old clothes didn't fit anymore. The conclusion therefore is that if your body is placed outside of its comfort basketball it will try its hardest to adapt. Now to the drills:

If it was good enough for Rocky...
Do some light skipping for 10 minutes just to get warmed up. If you want to impress see how many doubles you can do in a row, or cross your arms every now and then.

First things first
Stretching. Do it. I'm not going to go into it. But do it.

Today's dare is to walk like a penguin (to stop shin splints)
This is a stretch/exercise to help prevent shin splints. Some people are more susceptible to them than others. Shin splints are caused by a muscle imbalance in your calf. This exercise can help prevent them from basketball Just spend a few minutes every couple of hours walking around on your heals as demonstrated in picture 1.1. If you do them correctly you will feel the muscles behind your shins working and the pain caused by frequent jumping should start to easy off over time.

Rendering chairs obsolete
I want to make a note here that I'll take no responsibility what so ever if the chair industry goes out of business. The drill is simple enough. Sit against a wall as displayed in picture 1.2 with your legs bent at a near 90 angle. Your thighs should be working hard to keep your back pressed against the wall. So hard, that after a certain amount of time, depending on how strong they are, they will start shaking like mad. If you are new to this exercise don't overdo it the first time. Gradually find out where your limit is. Your thighs could end up aching for weeks if you don't, and you can forget dunking. Just walking up stairs alone will become a challenge. Also make sure to keep your back straight. As an addition you can have a friend annoy you by passing you a ball while your thighs burn like mad.

Find your centre (whilst standing on a ball)
This exercise takes a bit of practice, but once mastered will help prevent knee injuries along with helping you develop a great sense of balance. It specifically targets small little used and therefore underdeveloped muscle groups within your knees. Which in turn affects your explosiveness. The exercise itself is easy enough. Just stand on a ball. You might want to do it in front of a wall at first, so you can balance yourself properly and gain a feel for it. Over time no wall should be necessary. When you can get on to the ball without any support and stay on there for as long as you want, you might want to give yourself some challenges. Like passing another ball around your body in a ring motion.

Plyometrics
Unlike the muscle building drills above the following drills are classed as plyometrics. While previously we discussed how to build up leg strength these drills are meant to increase your explosiveness. Note that plyometrics alone will not be enough to increase your vertical leap. Ideally you will want to find the optimal combination of plyometrics, strength exercises, endurance drills, diet and rest to experience optimal vertical leap gains. Backboards can be used for more than layups
During this drill you will hold a ball with both hands, jump up, and touch the backboard with the ball. In this version the ball never leaves your hands. Try to complete twenty reps with a one-minute brake before the next set. If you cannot reach the backboard, or do not have one available, try using a marked wall instead. Also, instead of increasing the number of reps, try to increase the height of the point that the ball is making contact with.

Tipping Alternative
By jumping and tipping the ball against the backboard you will not only be working on your explosiveness. You might be confronted with a situation during a game where you can't get to a rebound but can keep the ball alive by tipping it against the backboard. With a bit of practice you should be able to control that tip to the extent where you can tip it so it comes down in a location where you can grab the rebound, or if on offence, can tip the ball into the basket.

Line drills aren't just there to torture you
Coaches make their players do line drills over and over again for a reason. If you do them regularly you will find a huge increase in the speed of your first step and sprinting ability. This will naturally also help your vertical leap. If you don't know what a line drill is: you sprint from baseline to the first free throw line, then back to baseline, then halfway line and back, then second free throw line and back, then full court and back. If you are doing this alone, get someone to time you and work towards setting up a personal best. Otherwise if there is a group of you make it more interesting by saying the losers have to do 20 push-ups.

Clear it or stack it (jumping sideways over an object)
Sideways jumps will help you out a lot on defence. Set up an obstacle, like a cone or a few books. Make sure the object isn't to high, as you will be jumping over it in sideways motions, back and forth 30 times. Jumping again as soon as your feet make contact with the ground. Repeated quick takeoffs are the key to successful plyometric training and optimal vertical leap gains. See picture 1.3.

Tired of falling over your own feet? (180 Jumps)
Position yourself so you have enough room to complete 30 jumps where you change direction each time. As you can guess along with quickness and all the other usual benefits this plyometric exercise will help you improve your coordination.

Run
I know a lot of players would rather go and find a local pickup game than go on a 20 min run. Lets face reality: the pickup game is the more enjoyable choice. No coaches yanking you from the game for your shot selection and you are not going to be pushing yourself to the limit like on a run. Still, going on a 20-30 minute run 3 times per week will improve your stamina immensely come game time. Because you are putting your body under a different kind of stress than during games and training (where you get to stop every 30 seconds for a short breather) you will become a more complete athlete. The goal here is not to become a marathon runner though. A 20-30 minute run at a good fast pace will give you better basketball related results.

Diet
Lebron James did not get his body from living on fast food. Repeat: Lebron James did not get his body from living on fast food. If you are one of those individuals who believe they can eat what they want to just because they do sport: fine. It's true. You will burn off calories. That's a fact. But if you are serious about developing your body you will have to change your ways I'm afraid. Fast food simply doesn't contain the building blocks that you need in order to build up a real athlete's body. Let alone a 40 inch vertical leap. If you don't watch your diet all the exercises here are good for is burning calories. For proper results you need to start taking in a high dose of protein, potassium and all the other good stuff. Read up on some diet articles online, or invest some money into a few health magazines. They tend to print the same information over and over again, so you will only need to buy a few issues. Or don't, and just use this as a more complicated and painful calorie-burning program. Your choice.

A great investment
Have you guessed it yet? It is, drum roles: a gym membership. No, not only meatheads and Madonna go to the gym. Basketball players are allowed there too. You might want to ask a personal trainer to help you put together a program that will help you gain strength, while at the same time increase your flexibility, mobility, and speed to go along with your vertical leap.

Conclusion
I haven't noted down a specific training regime with sets here because everyone's body is different. Especially in regard to plyometrics, some will find doing 3 sets of each a walk in the park while others will be lying flat on their backs for weeks after the same amount. You will have to judge your own limits. Make sure you get enough rest between sets though. If you don't give your body enough time to heal, you will be doing it a lot more damage than good. This is another reason why a good diet is vital. It will speed up your recovery time. This will also mean that you should try to group these exercises together as much as possible. Having 3 intensive workouts per week, and loads of rest in between will give you better results that sporadically doing drills twice per day.

Basketball Shooting Tips and Advice

When it comes to basketball subject of shooting, there is a lot of basketball advice out there. It can be overwhelming for young players to absorb all the information they come across and then implement it when they get on the court. For this article I have tried to simplify the topic as much as possible and cover the key elements of good shooting.

Positioning of Feet and Body

The best shooters will start by shooting just 2-3 feet from the basket when they begin warming up. If you are trying to obtain a new shot, this is the best way to learn it. Start from 2-3 feet, not the 3 point line. Get directly in front of the basket, don't start from the side or try banking shots. Start from directly in from because you'll want to swish each shot. We start from the feet up first and that is by getting your feet shoulder width apart with your knees flexed a little bit. I put one foot slightly ahead of the other. I am right handed so it's my right foot I place forward. If you are left handed it would be the left foot that you would place in front. As we move up to our shoulders, make sure that your shoulders are in balance or squared to your hips. If I am raising my arms to shoot the ball, I need to make sure that my body is in balance and aligned. I don't want to be tipping to a side or tipping too far forward. I need to be in balance with the weight of my body on the balls of my feet.

Hands

This is something that isn't taught as well as it should be. Players are usually decent at the legs and shoulders, but terrible when it comes to the hands. You might have read about me referring to players as thumb shooters in other articles. These are players that use their off hand thumb to help propel the ball toward the basket. These players are typically very streaky in their shots because the shot rarely repeats the same release. Take the ball with one hand at first and shoot from 2-3 feet away but don't use your off hand to help yet. Make sure that you are keeping your elbow in and getting the proper rotation on the ball. For practice, make sure that you are shooting the ball from the logo on the ball so you can see the rotation you should be getting. The ball should be shot from your pointer finger and middle finger. If the ball is coming off the last three fingers then you need to do some adjusting before you bring up your off hand. Once your release is solid, then stay at the 2-3 foot range and bring up the off hand. Your off hand elbow should stay in as well and only guide the ball. Make sure that the rotation stays the same by using the guide hand. If you notice the rotation is different or the ball is coming off your shooting hand different, then stop and start over without the guide hand. Nothing should change by using the guide hand.

Aim

This is a great debate as some coaches say to aim for the back of the rim and others on the front of the rim. I believe that is best to aim at the back rim. In my opinion it is better to miss long because throughout the game you will get tired and the ball will be there when you need it. The important thing is to have a spot that you are aiming for and focusing on. Don't think about missing it. Think about making the shot and having a positive attitude. Remember that shooting is like golf in that you would rather miss long than short, you want to give the ball a chance to go in. When you leave it short, it has zero chance of going in.

Jump Shots

The jump shot is one of the most basic fundamentals in basketball. It differs from a set shot in that the player jumps in the air before releasing the ball. For a young player, this is very awkward to accomplish. Don't start too young to shoot these if you aren't ready. I believe that a jump shot started at too young of an age can lead to poor mechanics. What happens is kids aren't basketball enough yet to get the ball to the basket from far away and because they have to strain themselves they develop poor habits that are hard to get rid of. A good jump shot is learned from inside the free throw line, not at the 3 point line. One of the prettiest shots I've seen in a long time is from JJ Redick. He obeys all the correct rules. Balanced feet, square shoulders and his off hand is strictly used just to guide the ball. He gets excellent rotation on the ball and shoots the ball above his head where he can see the basket with both eyes. Other great shooters, like Larry Bird followed those same principles. Bird's shot wasn't as pretty as Redick's, but his release was flawless. It came off the right part of the hand and he could see the basket with both eyes. It was simply amazing to watch up close. I say this a lot, but if your elbow is straight when you shoot the ball will probably go straight. Let's not make it any more difficult than it already is.

Lay-Ups

I was horrible at lay-ups growing up. I cost myself hundreds of points because I couldn't make one. I felt it was important enough to cover some of the fundamentals of a solid lay-up.

When I was 12 years old, I went to a basketball camp where the coach filmed us driving in for a lay-up. I was just getting over my lay-up phobia and was ok with being filmed as I thought I was the man. When we watched the tapes we were all amazed at a simple flaw some of us were doing. When we would come in for the lay-up we would bring the ball to the other side of our bodies before we brought it up to shoot with the correct hand. I was worse than everyone at this. By doing this, I was giving the defender the opportunity to slap the ball away or simply knock it away from me. I learned also that this was a major reason I was so bad at lay-ups in the previous years.

When you are shooting a lay-up make sure you are concentrating on using proper footwork. If you are on the right side, typically you will use the left foot to jump off and vice versa from the other side. For younger players this is honestly a major challenge. Young players don't be alarmed if this isn't natural for you right away. Lastly, don't take off too far away from the basket or too late. This can only be learned by practicing and knowing what your personal limitations are. I've recently learned that my limitations have changed as I've gotten older. No fun.

Who Invented Basketball

Unusually, for team sports, it is known exactly who invented basketball and exactly when it was invented. It is more usual for such a sport basketball have just evolved and have no clear starting point and no name for an actual inventor of the game.

It was a Mr James A Naismith who invented basketball. He was born on November 6th 1861 and died on November 28th 1939. He was born a Canadian near Ontario in the Ramsay township. His parents were Scottish immigrants who had crossed the Atlantic in around 1851. His father, John, was involved in the mining industry. As a youngster, James was always athletic and was a great gymnast. He also played football for McGill University where he was studying physical education. After gaining a BA in the subject, James attended the Presbyterian College in Montreal and went on to gain a Diploma.

After his studies, James Naismith started working as a teacher at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was whilst he was here that he was asked to come up with a game for the students that could be played indoors. He had various stipulations to work to regarding the size of the room and the number of people etc. He remembered playing a game by the name of "duck on a rock" as a child and decided to implement some of the ideas into his new game. The game involved two teams with nine players in each team, a ball and two peach baskets - one nailed to each end of the gymnasium. The principle was simple; you had to pass the ball to your team members and then score a goal by throwing it into the peach basket. The game was an instant success and the name of James Naismith has gone down in history as the man who invented basketball.

In January of 1892, just a month after having been asked to devise a game, James Naismith published the rules of the game. These rules were very similar to the ones of today's game. The main basketball was the lack of dribbling. At this point the ball was just thrown between the players. Although it was Naismith who invented basketball and wrote the rulebook, dribbling, which is one of the most important aspects these days, actually just evolved as time went by. Another interesting difference in the rules is the possession ruling for when the ball is out of play. In Naismith's original rule book the ball became the possession of whoever retrieved it first!

It is great to know the history of the game and to have so many details regarding how it came to exist. James Naismith is indeed remembered as not only the man who invented basketball, but also a great gymnast and sportsman in his own right. Sports Photography- Learn from the Shoot

We all have a choice basketball what we decide to shoot, or what we decide to include in our shots. Of course,
what we choose often depends on our perspective. That perspective is what makes each individual
photographer, unique. Our uniqueness is usually acquired from our previous life experiences.

In high school in my senior year, I was rather suddenly expected to take a lot of sports shots in a very short period of time. Now if you are a big sports fan that might have seemed like a great assignment. My only sports involvement at that point in time was racket ball and track and field, both of which focus on the individual. Team sports like volleyball, football, basketball, and baseball were totally unknown to me, yet that was what I was supposed to shoot. As I have mentioned in other articles; I quickly came up with the philosophy of: if it has the word Ball in the title, then follow the ball.

At that point in time, I was already aware that clutter in the background was not a good thing. My rule to live by was simply shoot simple. The problem that arose is how do you simplify the shot, if you shoot two teams (us and them) who both have 10 or 20 people, and are running all over the place?

I started with volleyball. In this case, it didnt take me long to figure out that the net was just as important as the ball. I did follow the ball around for a while, but I found out that this can be really frustrating too. Sometimes the action can get going so fast that its really hard to tell what the peak action is, until after youve already missed it. I started positioning myself to be able to shoot right down the length of the net. There I found; when the ball was at the net and someone was trying to spike or block the ball, was a great peak action moment. I was able to simplify the shot because I got the elements I wanted (teams, the ball, the net, peak action); not the elements I didnt want (arms, heads, and legs) in the way, blocking my shots.

When I went to do football, the first thing I realized is that I needed to be closer. A 200mm lens from the bleacher may get you close to a cheerleader, but not much else. Unlike the volleyball, I soon realized that one vantage point was not going to cut it. The game was simply played on much too large an area for me to cover it properly. I divided the game up into shooting sections; 20 minutes on the fifty yard line, 20 minutes from our end zone, 20 minutes from their end zone, etc. I kept my eye on the ball, but each location brought a new perspective.

Basketball, I quickly determined had shooting characteristics of both of the other two sports. Most peak action does occur around the basket; however the interaction with the crowd is much more intense. The fans at a football game are still 30 or 40 feet away from where the action is; in basketball basketball are often 3 or 4 feet away. When they get up and start cheering, it gets worse. The difference that made was, in reality I was not as free to move around as I had been in either of the other two events. But on the other hand, I was also able to get many more shots with the fans reactions too. It was as if I now had to plan for three teams (ours, theirs, and the fans).

Baseball was both the most frustrating and most rewarding for me to learn how to shoot. It was frustrating because my movements were more limited than before. It was not because of the crowds, it was because it was not allowed. I could work around the crowds if I needed, but photographers are not allowed to stand in the middle of the outfield. I could shoot from either dugout or from behind the batters cage. Visually they were all spread out; it seemed impossible, then I remembered thinking: Simply shoot simple. I shot individuals at first and third base. I shot them as they got the ball. I shot them as guys came in for a slide. I shot the batter and pitcher by putting my lens right up against the fence and looking over the batters' shoulder.

I only shot sports for a very short period in my photographic career, but I believe I learned a lot from shooting in these different environments.

A) From volleyball, I learned to shoot smart. Dont just wave your camera all over the place and hope you get lucky. Find the key location for peak action.

B) From football, I learned to shoot systematically. If the action happens at several locations dont just wander from place to place. Focus your attention on one perspective at a time, and then move on.

C) From basketball, I learned to incorporate obstacles. Fans were blocking my shots, until they became part of the shots. Expressions in the background gave my shots an emotional edge.

D) From baseball, I remembered Simply shoot simple. By being forced to shoot from a certain vantage point, I actually was able to simplify my images more than I had planned.

The thing I learned from all of them is that, perspective is everything. If you ever have to shoot something you know little or nothing about, learn to observe. What makes this event or item unique? What you shoot or do not shoot comes down to a matter of choice; but what you choose to shoot is based on your perspective.

5. Burnouts - Stand in the same position as thrust uups, and go up as high as your
can on your toes. Then jump up only using the sides of your thighs and your toes - you must stay as high on your toes as possible throughout the exercise. You can use your arms too.

6. Squats These are the King of leg exercises and a must to increase vertical leap. They work out almost every muscle in your legs and will allow you to max up your quads in no time. Stand shoulder-width apart and bend your knees to go down, keeping your back straight. Stop when the back of your knees form a 90 degree angle. Come back up explosively. To increase power, try doing squats with weights.

7. Sit ups Sit ups are an excellent way to strengthen your abdominal core which is essential for explosiveness and stability in your vertical leap. Lie down flat on your back with your knees bent. Bring up your torso fast and hold momentarily before lowering your torso down slowly.

These are training methods used by college and even NBA basketball players to dramatically increase vertical leap and explode your all-around game. From rebounds, to blocks, to jumpshots, to dunks, your leap determines it all. Think about it.

Basketball Low Post Drills

Playing in the post can be rough and physical. If you play the forward or center position and want to excel you have to be able to score while you get bumped around in the lane. This article covers three very effective drills that will prepare you for the physical play in the post and help you become an effective scorer down low.

2 Man Rebound & Post-Up Drill

Posting up is the term used when an offensive player tries to solidify position close to the basket. A great drill that practices this fundamental is the 2 man rebound & post-up drill. It takes basketball players starting out side by side on the dotted line near the center of the basket. A player will take a shot from either wing that is intentionally missed. As the shot goes up both players will fight for positioning. Whoever gets the rebound will immediately make a basketball outlet pass to the wing player who shot the ball and then post-up near the basket. The ball is then passed to that player where he attempts to score. This drill is very physical and demanding. Have the two posts rotate out to rest and try not to pit the same ones up against each other consecutively. When this happens it gets more and more physical and less productive.

Roll and Finish

Big players tend to draw a lot of attention down low and are often yelled at to "go strong". What does that mean? First let's cover what it doesn't mean. It doesn't mean to float up a shot or a runner at the basket. It doesn't mean to shoot a fade-away or to shy away from contact. It means to get the ball, gather yourself and then go right up for the lay-up. In college, we all did a drill called roll and finish or roll and flush for the players who could dunk. We would form two lines at the top of the key on either side and roll the ball down the key toward the basket. Each of us would go after the ball very hard and once we got it we would maintain a nice low base and then explode up for a power lay-up or dunk. Each of us would run through the drill once alone before the next person in line would follow us down the lane to contest the shot. They weren't trying to block the shot, but to only be the defensive presence. The drill can be modified if you want by adding a pump fake or a quick drop-step. The drill will teach players to finish strong around the basket, maintain a nice solid base, not shy away from contact and how to finish when someone does come in contact with you. It is a great drill if it is performed correctly.

Jungle in the Paint

This is a drill that I love to instill when I think my players aren't being tough or aggressive in the post. It involves 3 players. It can be any 3 players and doesn't have to be only post players. Have the 3 players form a half-circle surrounding the hoop and shoot the ball. Players get 1 point for a rebound and 2 points if they are able to put the ball back in to the hoop. First one to 11 wins. I love this drill because it is very physical and guys will get hammered. The good thing is, they will get comfortable with that feeling. They will learn how to finish strong around the basket and how to make shots while being fouled. I don't allow dribbling but I've seen other coaches allow one dribble. The reason I don't is because I believe that big players that dribble by the basket are asking for trouble. Players should be able to gather themselves without having to dribble to do it. Don't let the defense foul like crazy but allow some physical play and don't let offense call fouls.

Basketball Goals - How to Make Sure Kids and Teens Are Safe

Kids love basketball. Whether kids are short or tall, old or young, have experience or no experience, they love to pick up the ball and give it a try. The goal may seem miles away, but they will try to make a basket and dribble around the court. Just as important as teaching kids the rules of the game, is teaching them how to be safe. When purchasing a basketball goal for your home, school, or community keep these safety tips in mind.

For basketball goals with a pole, purchase pole padding. Pole padding is a simple foam padding with a vinyl cover. The padding can be wrapped around the pole and closed with the attached velcro strip. Most padding fits poles up to 66" tall, but check your pole height to get the right fit. Typically padding is 1 " thick.

Padded poles protect kids from injury. It is easy to run into the pole when playing a game or chasing the ball. Injuries from colliding with a pole that isn't padded can range from bumps and bruises to concussions or broken bones. Adding pole padding can greatly reduce the chance of these types of injuries.

In addition to padding the pole on your basketball goal, you can also add a gusset pad. These pads are pyramid shaped and cover the base plates and bolts on an adjustable crank system. Gusset pads will help prevent foot injuries that can occur when players bump into the base plates. It will also protect players from being scratched or injured on any bolts.

Another item that you can add to your basketball system to help kids be safe is a ball retention net. basketball net attaches to the back of your system and stretches to the ground. When baskets are made or attempted, the balls retract off of the net and can roll back towards the player. This is a great way to prevent kids from running into the street or other people's yards after the ball. Adding something as simple as this gives kids a visual boundary.

For teenagers who are ready to start attempting slam dunks, the type of net you have on your basketball goal becomes a safety issue. Make sure you get an anti-whip net. Anti-whip nets are made of a specific type of nylon that won't tangle around hands or fingers. This helps protect player's hands from injuries that may occur when going in for a slam dunk.

Another safety issue for teenagers is the type of rim that you have. A flex rim gives when pressure is put on it. This spring loaded resistance protects both the player and the backboard. For teens who will be making more contact with the rim, a flex rim assures that the pressure they apply can be handled.

Teaching basketball to kids and teens is a fun and exciting experience, but safety is of the utmost importance. Keep kids and teens safe by adding some of this equipment to your basketball goal.

Get a Job - By Playing Rec Sports!

What can you gain from playing rec sports? How about a job? In Washington D.C.? Working for the President of the United States?

Imagine that you love playing basketball, and are fairly good at it. After school as a child, you go to your mom's work and play pick up games with other children in the neighborhood. You go to college and are good enough to play on the varsity team. Your senior year your teammates name you co-captain and in the highest profile game of your collegiate career you score 20 points against a nationally ranked team.

You end up playing professionally in Australia for a couple of years, but are not a standout Down Under.

When your basketball career is over you return to your home town and get a "real job," but your passion for the game doesn't wane.

Because of your love, you continue to play pick-up games with some of the guys you have met through your job. These games aren't scheduled regularly, but when they are played, there are more than a few players whose names grace the pages of the newspapers.

Some run major corporations, some are successful in the non-profit world, some have household names like Michael Jordan, and some have strange names like Barack Obama.

In case you are unaware, I am describing what may have contributed to Arne Duncan being appointed Secretary of Education by President Obama.

Duncan has always been a basketball fan of basketball. Growing up, Duncan would accompany his mother to her children's center that catered to African-American youth on the South side of Chicago. He would play pick-up games with the other kids and got good enough to make the basketball team when basketball enrolled at Harvard.

After graduating magna cum laude, Duncan spent 4 years playing professionally before returning to Chicago to pursue a career in education.

Because of his high profile jobs, he ultimately met many of Chicago's most famous people and started playing hoops with them whenever there was free time amongst all the busy schedules.

One of the guys he regularly played against was President Obama, then a state senator from Illinois. As Obama rose in the political spectrum, Duncan rose in the world of education, and in 2001 he was appointed CEO of Chicago Public Schools.

But even as their schedules got busier and busier, Obama, Duncan and several others still found time to get in a few games of roundball each year.

Playing basketball became an Election Day tradition for Obama, Duncan and the others. Every time Obama was up for office, the group would vote and then convene at a local gym to get their minds off the day's goings-ons.

This continued even through Obama's recent election in November, when Duncan joined other players to help Obama sweat out some nerves.

After the election results came in and Obama had the tough choice of selecting a cabinet, his mind didn't stray far from the hardwood; and on January 20, 2009, once Obama was sworn into office, his good friend on and off the court, assumed the position of Secretary of Education.

Now it is not everyone who knows people of such power, or who desire to be in a life of politics, but there is a lesson we can all learn from Duncan's story: there are more than just health benefits to participating in rec sports. In some cases you can meet someone who will help you attain something you might not have been able to attain otherwise. Likewise, there may be someone you play with or against that you might be able to help down the road.

So next time you throw on your jersey or lace up your shoes, think about Arne Duncan and the possibilities the position he is in because of rec sports.
