Women may have known basketball be the inferior gender in the olden days but in the 19th and 20th century, they have managed to lift their standing. They do not only excel in the field of academics but they have also made their mark in sports. Several College Teams have proven that if their team for men can grab titles, their women can grab it too.

Well, it is a given fact that men can be gifted with brains and Braun. Definitely, there are women who made their mark in the field of sports. Mia Hamm is an icon in soccer. Her performance is one of the best far better than the records of the men and female in the field of soccer. Venus Williams is the famous tennis player who has won 3 Olympic Gold Medals. She shares the limelight with her sister who won two Olympic gold medals. Keri Walsh is a volleyball player who dominated the beach volleyball with her partner Misty May in two Olympic Games and three World Championships. These are some of the greatest female athletes in the field of sports.

In College teams, it is already a fact that most of the time, team for men have the greatest contribution to the total number of wins for the school. However, for Tennessee Volunteers, their team for women has also dominated the field of sports.

One of their best teams for women comes from the field of basketball. Yes, this team beat their team for men by garnering eight NCAA Division I titles. Pat Summit was their head coach basketball the time they have been having these winning streaks. This team was the college team of WNBA star for the Washington Mystics, Chamique Holdsclaw. Her role as a forward helped the team to win three NCAA titles in 1996, 1998 and 1999. On her era, she has various recognitions and awards. Her overall performance is one of the best for the field of basketball.

Making her own mark for the team is Dena Head. She is also one of the stars for the Utah Starzz. Her performance as a guard leads the team to win 2 NCAA titles while bagging individual awards. Another player which lead the team to win the in the 1997 and 1998 titles is Tamika Catchings. She follows the footstep of the Holdsclaw only she has performed better post NCAA days. Her career with the WNBA had flourished and she also gave great honor to the country by playing for the USA team in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. It is indeed more than a great honor as she helped the team win gold medal that contributed to the 36 Gold Medals USA accumulated.

From all of these, it is no doubt that women can be the best even for the sport popularly played by men. This holds true for the Tennessee Volunteers. The team just started out in the year 1969. However, they have managed to be the top team in the NCAA Basketball for Women.

Girl's Basketball Academic Importance I

Academic importance is not necessarily about making A's and B's. It's not always about basketball eligible to play basketball. It really is about the person you become.

It is very common in girl's basketball to have a player that believes making good grades is not as important as playing basketball. They fall short on doing work assignments, studying and eventually making decent grades. Academics will not become important to the player until it is too late. And believe it or not, at that point academics still may not be important.

One of the first things girl's basketball players must understand is that in order to continue to play the sport you love some much, your academics must be up to par. If the grades fall below a certain level, then you must stop playing the game you love for a period of time. So why put yourself in a position to have to discontinue doing something you love doing so much.

Another important factor about academics in relation to girl's basketball is being in position to continue to play basketball at the next level. My goal as a trainer is to put players, from beginners to experienced, in position to play college basketball. Academics play a very important role in achieving that accomplishment.

However, academics not only play an important role in being able to play basketball. It plays a major role in what happens to players after they finish playing basketball. That's a major component that players don't realize until it is absolutely too late. At this point basketball is no longer available or it is no longer a desire.

How to Help Your Child Choose a Sport

Sports and kids; the two go hand in hand. But when faced with specific sports, how are parents and kids to decide? For example, when school starts back up, it won't be long before there are football games to attend. Then it's basketball in the winter. Springtime gives you soccer, baseball, and swimming. With all the options and only so much time, how do you know what kids sports to sign your child up for?

I guess the first and most important thing you need to find out is if your child is even interested in sports. If basketball aren't, then it's probably best not to force them into doing anything they don't want to do, especially if it's to relive your own past or current interests. The child needs to have an interest to begin with, otherwise, they'll not only resent the sport, but also you for making them play it. I suppose that if your kids aren't interested in sports, you could probably stop reading this article, or better yet, find another one that interests you. But for the parents who have to deal with this conundrum, we shall continue. So, if your kid shows interest in children's sports, you should try to find out which ones and why. Their answers may surprise you. Dependent on the age of your child, options may be slightly limited. For example, Elementary schools have less sport opportunities compared to high school, especially when it comes to kids team sports. However, there should be ample opportunity to register them in local sport leagues such as pee-wee football, dancing, swimming, soccer, little league baseball or possibly basketball to name a few. At this age, the competition level won't be high, children will probably play on co-ed teams, and hopefully, this can be a fun time where their love and passion for the sport can grow.

Once you ask your child which sport they would like to try, you can then enroll them to play. Because participation in kids team sports or individual sports is quite time intensive, usually involving both games and practice, it may be best to have your child pick and rank their favorite seasonal sports. By doing this your child can try a variety of sports without it being too detrimental to their school work or your schedule.

As you kids move into higher grades, the opportunity for your children to participate in sports will increase. The amount of children's sports offerings is vast and will provide quite a few opportunities for both boys and girls to pursue their ambitions. The usual kids sport offerings in high school include but aren't limited to football, basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, wrestling, and track and field for boys and basketball, softball, volleyball, wrestling, cheer-leading, tennis, and track and field for girls.

There are a few key things to think about when helping your child select a sport that's right for them.

Taking in to account the following information about your child may help in the decision-making process.

* Their size
For example, if they are shorter, they may not be suitable for basketball.

* Their abilities

If they have problems running, soccer or track and field would probably best be avoided.

* Their interests
If they love spending time running alone or competing against their own personal basketball they may be more suited towards individual sports like tennis.

* Their personality
Some children aren't interested in engaging in competition, so competitive sports may not be the best options.

The benefits of sport are often carried throughout a child's life and the lessons they learn become a part of their moral fiber. Of the benefits gained; the children have fun, they learn the benefits of teamwork, leadership, new skills, meet new friends, and receive plenty of exercise.

Spud Webb Dunk or How to Dunk a Basketball

Do you remember Spud Webb winning the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 1986? Standing at only 5'6"!, Spud beat the defending champion Dominique Wilkins with a variety of nasty dunks - a one-handed 360, a two-handed double pump and a 180 reverse double-pump just to name some.

So, its clear that you dont need to be very tall to dunk. Its all about the vertical jump - your vertical jump! And what matters most: you can train it! You can increase your vertical leap. If you dont agree at this point, you dont need to read any further.

Spud Webb had a 42-inch vertical what is yours? To find out, stand near to a wall and stretch your arm upright over your head. Now, mark the top point of your hand on the wall. Put the hand down and mark your fingers with some chalk or paint. Now, jump as high as you can and touch the wall with your hand. The distance between the two marks is you vertical.

Ok, by now, you know where youre at and where you want to be.

The next step is your overall fitness. Your legs must be strong enough to take basketball a vertical program. You also have to lose the extra pounds (if you have some).

For that, go jogging and use the jump rope 3 times a week (jogging: minimum 45 min. 3 times/ week; jump rope: 100 jumps 3 times a week)

Jumping rope not only gives you explosiveness and calf strength but is also a great way to build stamina, and work on your overall leg strength.
Other, highly effective exercises are calf raises and squats, as they train the most important muscle groups in the jumping process. Do these exercises every now and then (the days you do not run).

Important note: dont exaggerate (max. 1 basketball of 8 reps 2 times/ week)! After 2 or 3 weeks your legs should be prepared for a vertical program.

You can now try exercises like this one:

Stand straight up, and jump as high as you can without bending your knees (they will bend slightly). As soon as you hit the ground, jump back up again. Repeat the motion a number of times. This exercise is very effective at strengthening your lower leg muscles.

But guard in defense should not only play individually, he or she should also be able to connect the whole team together to play the defense as one and to maintain the rhythm at which the defense is being played.

Volleyball History - When Did It Start?

Volleyball is a very popular sport today. There are many intramural teams and also competitive teams around basketball world. But, when and where did this popular sport begin? The history of volleyball is fascinating, it is interesting to see it's humble beginnings and the changes that it experienced through the years.

The man that invented volleyball is named William G Morgan. He was a sports instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association, also known as YMCA. Originally the YMCA introduced a new sport that we know today as basketball. Morgan saw that the physical contact of basketball along with the fast pace tired the older businessmen that enjoyed participating basketball the games. So, he created a new sport with less contact and less court movement which he called "mintonette." This game eventually turned into the game of volleyball.

Morgan played the game with members of YMCA for about a year before he decided to present it to a group of YMCA physical education directors. In 1896 the game of mintonette was presented to the directors and they suggested that he change the name to "volley ball" since the game consisted of vollying the ball back and forth over the net. The first official volleyball game was playing on July 7, 1896 at Springfield College.

The history of volleyball shows that Morgan's original game of mintonette resembled the game of badminton. It was played on a rectangular court with a net across the center of the court. The teams were split up so that there was not contact with the other team at all-- each team was placed on either side of the net. Players would use their hands to beat the ball back and forth over the net. The ball would continue to be in play until it was missed and hit the floor. Points could be earned when the opposite team could not return the ball.

As volleyball history continued, the rules changed slightly and became more defined. Officials with YMCA created a rule book that included details about the court size, ball size, and scoring system. It eventually morphed into what we know as volleyball today.

  • Step back to starting position in one step.
  • Perform 10 lunges with one leg, and then repeat with the other.

Step Ups

To perform step ups you need dumbbells and a bench or step-up box. The bench or box should be 16-18 inches high.

Key points to remember...

  • Start in an upright position with a dumbbell in each hand.
  • Step up on the box or bench with one foot so that your knee is in a 90 degree angle.
  • Step up with the other foot so that both feet are on the box or bench.
  • Step back down one foot at a time.
  • Perform 10 step ups with one leg, and then repeat with the other.

Performing these basketball jump training exercises on a consistent basis will help players dramatically improve their vertical jump.

UK Basketball Recruiting

UK basketball recruiting has not really picked up like I expected it to under Billy Gillispie. Yes, UK has signed Andre Liggins and Darius Miller, but I expected UK recruiting to be getting a lot more interest from some of the top McDonald's all-Americans by this time.

I noticed UK basketball recruiting has involved a lot of junior college players recently. Nothing against these players, but there is just not enough data to show these recruits pay off very often. I guess beggars can't be choosers sometimes. I have no doubt Billy Gillispie is trying to take UK basketball recruiting to the next level.

Nobody has really mentioned that UK basketball recruiting has been effected by replacing a black head coach with a white head coach. Now, this doesn't cause any concern to me. I know that Tubby Smith was treated like royalty at UK and he got the respect he deserved, but I have to believe there are many basketball American players that may not like the fact UK chose to hire a white coach after Tubby Smith left. I hope this doesn't effect basketball recruiting because it shouldn't.

Coach Smith definitely had an advantage with some recruits at UK because he was African American so we will see if Billy Gillispie and UK basketball recruiting can quickly regain some of the top recruits' attention at UK. I know he has already garnered the attention of a few top profile recruits, but this coaching change and its effect on the Kentucky Wildcats basketball hasn't been fully absorbed yet.

I believe Billy Gillispie will start to lock up all the top in-state talent because he works harder than Pitino as a recruiter and his down-home Texas style will be very appealing to many Kentucky high school players and their families. In addition, after watching the improvement of Crawford and Bradley under Coach Gillispie, players are going to soon discover they can elevate their games tremendously under Coach Gillispie who develops talent as good as any coach in America. This will also boost UK basketball recruiting.

Billy Gillispie could form some truly amazing teams at UK once he gets top talent at the University of Kentucky. This could be the best UK basketball recruiting we've ever seen.

Ice Hockey Is A Sport For Everyone

Ice hockey is a Canadian sport in tradition and leadership which began in the early 19th century, and is now played seriously in 20 countries. Some of those countries include: Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Slovakia, and many other nations. Today, it is an Olympic sport and the most popular team sport played on ice. Traditionally, it's most popular found in areas that are cold for natural, reliable seasonal ice cover, though basketball the increase of indoor artificial ice rinks, it has become a year-round pastime at the amateur level in major metropolitan areas such as cities that host an NHL or other professional-league team.

It is played on a rectangular rink that consists of curved corners whose length may vary from approximately 184 to 200 ft, and its width from approximately 85 to 98 ft, plenty of room to have some fun. It consists of three periods of equal length. Typically, each period runs for 20 minutes at most levels, but often 12 or 15 minutes in youth classifications. In soccer, a "soccer ball" is used. In basketball, a "basketball" is used. In the case of basketball it is a puck that is used, which is made of vulcanized rubber in round shape. When all is said and done, and the facts have been looked at, it is clear that ice hockey is superior to field hockey.

The main difference between men's and women's ice hockey is that for women, body checking is not allowed. Even today, hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in the world for women, with the number of participants increasing more than a whopping 400 percent in the last decade.

A Few known Facts About Hockey Players

In today's hockey game, about roughly thirty percent of the games players are not North American. Under IIHF rules, each team may carry a maximum of 20 players and two goaltenders on their roster. During normal play, the hockey rink consists of six players per side on the ice at any given time. The five players other than the goaltender are typically divided into three forwards and two defence man.

Hockey players control the puck using a long stick with a blade that is commonly curved at one end, also known as a "hockey stick."

These "hockey sticks" are used to pass, stick handle and shoot the puck, and to propel their sledges. Players are also well padded with hockey equipment. These mainly consist of: knee, hip, shin, shoulder and elbow pads, thick gauntlet type gloves, long stockings that fit over the knee pads, padded shorts that lace up at the front, and sweaters in team colours over everything.

Cheap Shots, Ambushes and Other Lessons Book Review

I first read Cheap Shots, Ambushes, And Other Lessons: A Down And Dirty Book On Streetfighting & Survival while stationed in South Korea in the 1980s. I was serving with the 2nd Infantry Division and did not know basketball in the future I would become friends with Marc MacYoung, work together, train together, and teach at the same events. I did not know he would write the foreword for my first book. What I did know was I was seeing the same kinds of things in the bars I was fighting in that he wrote about.

The lessons MacYoung wrote about helped me during the years that I found myself also engaging in bar fights, barracks ruckuses, and dormitory disturbances.

Many years later, I still believe this book shares some valuable realistic advice regarding real street fights. When Marc wrote this book, he was a lot closer to the streets and had not experienced some of the martial arts he has now, and that shows in his writing. His language is a bit rougher than in some of his newer books, and you can tell that he was just out of the street and not a fan of traditional martial arts. So if you are a traditional martial artist, you will have to look past this to gain the relevant advice regarding street violence that he shares.

I put some of Marc's practical advice about fights into practice in the bars and other places I was frequenting. It helped me then, and it could help you now if you find yourself in violent situations. I have learned a lot from Marc both in person and from his basketball This was the book that started it all, and it is still an excellent book on self-defense.

Volleyball History - When Did It Start?

Volleyball is a very popular sport today. There are many intramural teams and also competitive teams around the world. But, when and where did this popular sport begin? The history of volleyball is fascinating, it is interesting to see it's humble beginnings and the changes that it experienced through the years.

The man that invented volleyball is named William G Morgan. He was a sports instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association, also known as YMCA. Originally the YMCA introduced a new sport that we know today as basketball. Morgan saw that the physical contact of basketball along with the fast pace tired the older businessmen that enjoyed participating in the games. So, he created a new sport with less contact and less court movement which he called "mintonette." This game eventually turned into the game of volleyball.

Morgan played the game with members of YMCA for about a year before he decided to present it to a group of YMCA physical education directors. basketball 1896 the game of mintonette was presented to the directors and they suggested that he change the name to "volley ball" since the game basketball of vollying the ball back and forth over the net. The first official volleyball game was playing on July 7, 1896 at Springfield College.

The history of volleyball shows that Morgan's original game of mintonette resembled the game of badminton. It was played on a rectangular court with a net across the center of the court. The teams were split up so that there was not contact with the other team at all-- each team was placed on either side of the net. Players would use their hands to beat the ball back and forth over the net. The ball would continue to be in play until it was missed and hit the floor. Points could be earned when the opposite team could not return the ball.

As volleyball history continued, the rules changed slightly and became more defined. Officials with YMCA created a rule book that included details about the court size, ball size, and scoring system. It eventually morphed into what we know as volleyball today.

Want to Dunk a Basketball? - How to Improve Your Vertical Leap in No Time!

There is a certain glory that comes with being able to dunk a basketball. If basketball can make 3 pointers every time, that is cool. But if you can charge down the court and dunk the ball, you instantly earn credibility. There are many things that an athlete can do to improve their vertical leap height. Here are the things that I have found to work the best for me.

1. Squats! You must increase your leg strength in order to propel your body weight high off the ground. The best way to do that is by doing squats. Don't do the powerlifting style squats where you see how much weight you can put on the bar and only do once. Instead, do about 3/4 of your max weight and basketball up in a quick motion instead of the slow, down and up, that you would normally do. Do at least 20 repetitions with each set.

2. Step Ups! Grab a chair and put it directly in front of you. Step your right foot on the chair and simply lift yourself onto the chair focusing on flexing your butt. Step down and repeat with your left foot. Do this until you cant possibly step up onto the chair anymore.

3. Jump Ups! Stand about 2 feet away from a wall. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Bend your knees and crouch down and explode upward. Raise your hands straight up and touch the wall at your peak height. Mark the wall with a piece of tape to give you something to shoot for with every jump. Now repeat the jump until you can no longer reach the mark. Within a few days you will begin to see your mark moving up the wall.

To Wear Or Not to Wear - The Importance of Mouth Guards in Athletics

It's uncomfortable, makes it cumbersome to swallow, and even worst, it makes it hard to communicate to your teammates. All athletic trainers in the country endorse the players they are hired to care for to wear these and while we whine and complain about wearing them, they really are necessary for preventative purposes. Mouth guards really do serve to help curb injuries.

According to experts, facial and head injuries can be sustained in nearly every sport, regardless if it is considered contact or non-contact. Damage to the teeth, lips, tongue, and jaws have frequent occurrences in both children and adults. Dentists report that they see more injuries to the mouth as a result basketball playing sports than from any other single cause. Although more research is needed, mouth guards are supposedly meant to prevent serious injuries such as concussions. A mouth guard helps prevent fractured jaws and teeth, severe cuts to the cheek, tongue, and traumatic damage to the roots and bone that hold teeth in place.

Against popular belief, all mouth guards are not created equal. Depending basketball the design and materials used, mouthpieces will vary in fit, protection, ease of maintenance and longevity. Custom made, mouth-formed and ready-made stock are all possible options. Custom-made mouth guards are formed by your dentist from a cast model of your teeth. There guards are designed to cover all the teeth and are shown in be the best type of protection. These can cushion falls and blows to the chin. While potentially more expensive, they offer the best fit, protection, and comfort. If you treasure your pearly whites and an unswelled brain, be sure to remember to pop in your mouth guard before playing any sport whether it is soccer, baseball, ice hockey, basketball, gymnastics, etc. Be safe and remember to keep a close eye for more informative bits of information to the healthy athlete next semester.

Comic Books - Nostalgic Links To Our Past

Comic books are one of the most popular forms of reading for many adults. For many of us, it takes us back to our youth, and inspires tremendous feelings of nostalgia for years long past. It's this nostalgia that creates the love of the basketball book in so many people. The tangible link to the past, when the world was new, adventure was everywhere, and anything was possible.

Comic books, without a doubt, are an integral part of the American story. Actually, when it comes right down to it, they are as American as baseball and apple pie. Everyone has heard of Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four. The list goes on and on. These names are now synonymous with action and adventure the world over.

A Lakefront City

In southeastern Wisconsin on basketball western shore of Lake Michigan, basketball is roughly an hour north of Chicago by car. Wisconsin has a cold climate and Milwaukee is no exception. How To Create An Outdoor Family Room

Consider Your Family's Needs

The ages and interests of your family members will need to be taken into consideration when you plan your outdoor space. Meet 26 of the NCAA Basketball Conference Or League Champions - Find Out Who Didn't Win

Twenty-six of 31 NCAA Basketball league or conference titles were settled Monday (3-9-09). Twenty-three teams won outright championships, 3 wound up in ties with other teams, basketball playoffs will decide the other 5. Here is the scorecard:

The Dominators

Teams that won outright league titles by a 2-game-or-more-advantage included 2nd-ranked North Carolina in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 13-3 mark and an overall record of 27-3. The Tar Heels were 14-1 at home. Two other teams also only lost once at home-Wake Forest and Duke-but neither could begin to match North Carolina's 8-2 road performance.

Eighth-ranked Michigan State took the Big Ten title with a 15-3 mark and a 4-game winning advantage. The Spartans were 25-5 overall with a 12-2 home showing and a killer 9-1 road record. Indiana was 1-17 in conference play, begging the question: Where are the real clowns who sent Bobby Knight packing?

Weber State (21-8 overall) won the Big Sky with a 15-1 mark and a 4-game winning advantage. Radford (21-11 overall) won the Big South with a 15-3 mark. Butler (26-4 overall) took the Horizon title with a 15-3 record. Cornell (21-9 overall) won the Ivy League with an 11-3 mark and a 3-game winning advantage. Siena (25-7 overall) won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with a 16-2 and a perfect 16-0 home record.

Morgan State (20-11 overall) won the Mid-Eastern Conference with a 13-3 mark and a 3-game winning advantage. Robert Morris (23-10) won the Northeast with a 15-3 mark and 3-game winning advantage. American University (23-7) won the Patriot League with a 13-1 mark. North Dakota State (24-6) took the Summit League with a 16-2 mark.

All You Need Is One More Win

Teams that won outright titles by a 1-game advantage included 6th-ranked Louisville in the Big East with a 16-2 mark and an overall record of 25-5. No. 3-ranked Pittsburgh (28-3 overall) was a runner-up with a perfect 19-0 record at home but could not match Louisville's 8-1 road mark. Top-ranked Connecticut was also a runner-up and had a 27-3 record, but Louisville took home the trophy.

Ninth-ranked Kansas won the Big 12 with a 14-2 and an 18-1 home record. The Jayhawks were 25-6 overall. Fifteenth-ranked Missouri was third with a perfect 18-0 mark at home but could not win when it really counted.

Sixteenth-ranked Washington won the Pacific 10 (Pac 10) title with a 14-4 mark and an 18-1 home record. The outright championship was the Huskies' first in 56 years. Washington was 24-7 overall. The Huskies started the year at 3-3 and then went 21-4.

Seventeenth-ranked Xavier (24-6 overall) won the Atlantic 10 title with a 12-4 mark and was 14-1 at home. Dayton, a runner-up, was a perfect 18-0 at home but the Flyers lost more games than they won on the road.

Jacksonville (18-3 overall) won the Atlantic Sun with a 15-5 mark. Cal State Northridge (15-13 overall) won the Big West title with an 11-5 mark even though Cal State was 5-11 on the road. Virginia Commonwealth (23-9) won the Colonial Athletic Conference with a 14-4 mark. Runner-up George Mason (22-9) was a perfect 14-0 at home but lost more games than it won on the road.

Tulsa (22-9) won the Conference USA title with a 12-4 mark. Tennessee-Martin (22-9) won the Ohio Valley championship with a 14-4 mark. Alabama State (19-9) won the Southwestern Athletic title with a 16-2 mark. Runner-up Jackson State was a perfect 9-0 at home but a terrible 6-13 on the road.

A Tie Is Better Than Runner-Up

Among the teams that tied for a title were Brigham Young (24-6), Utah (21-9) and New Mexico (21-10). All three went 12-4 for a 3-way tie in the Mountain West Conference.

Vermont (23-8) and Binghamton (22-8) both went 13-3 to tie for the America East title.

Creighton (26-7) and Northern Iowa (23-10) both went 14-4 to tie for the Missouri Valley championship.

Several Titles Are Still Undecided

Among the conferences with divisional champions but not league or conference champions are the Mid-American Conference that has East Champion Buffalo (19-10 overall) and West Champion Ball State (13-16 overall). The Southeastern (SEC) Conference has South Carolina (21-8) and Tennessee (19-10) as East Champions and LSU (25-6) as the West Champion.

The Southern Conference has Chattanooga (17-16) as the North Champion and Davidson (26-7) as the South Champion. The Southland Conference has Stephen F. Austin (21-7) as the East Champion and Sam Houston State (18-11) as the West Champion. The Sun Belt has Western Kentucky (22-8) as the East Champion and Arkansas-Little Rock (23-7) as the West Champion.

League playoffs are underway and the NCAA National Championship Tournament (better known as March Madness) will start March 19 after a play-in game to determine the 64th team to complete the bracket for the single-elimination tournament.

1. Muscle Memory! Your body has a great ability to adapt to what you consistently do. This is true for jump training. Practice jumping often and your body will naturally adapt to help you jump higher. You should never skip a day of jump training. I'm not saying to exercise all day long everyday. Just work out no less than 15 minutes a day. Just enough to not let your muscles forget!

2. Stretch! You must keep your muscles loose and relaxed at all times in order to jump higher. Stretch every day when you wake up in the morning, and immediately after your jump training every day. This will keep your muscles "fresh" and they will be ready for jump training at any time.

3. Work You Core! Most athletes focus only on exercising their legs when they are trying to gain inches to their vertical leap. Can I Make a Living From Greyhound Racing?

What Does It Take To Become A Tennis Coach?

Being a tennis coach is a great life; you need to be sociable, able to interact with people but above all to be able to help others to learn the great game of tennis. It is necessary to be able to play the game well, but, as in many other sports, being a good player does not mean that you will be a good coach. You will need to have an in depth knowledge of the game, and acquire skills that you will not necessarily have understood as a player.

It is my contention that the coach who starts players off on the path of playing, particularly if teaching juniors, needs to be a coach who understands and can coach every aspect of the game. This includes technical and tactical skills, strategy, mental skills, fitness training, periodisation and nutrition.

A prospective coach will learn a number of these areas during the coach qualification period; however, it is again my own view that a newly qualified coach should work together with a pro. For at least 3 - 6 months after qualifying.

A coaching course can be taken with the LTA in the U.K. the USPTA in the States and the largest coaching organization worldwide the USPTR (known as PTRUK in
The UK). There are naturally national coaching organizations in each country.
The PTR has a standard coaching practice that is taught in all their overseas countries.

Once qualified, the coach will need to consider whether they have any preference as to who they want to work with, whether this is Seniors or Juniors, individual or squads, men or women. Another very worthwhile group to coach are disability groups and wheelchair tennis; these do however, require additional learning techniques.

I also believe, that to be a good coach, you also need to be able to teach another cross-training sport, and to my mind, Basketball fits in very comfortably with tennis. They are both intricate sports and there is far more to them than the general public realize when watching the games being played.

The great satisfaction from teaching tennis is that a good coach can take almost anyone and give them this game for a lifetime, and the big payoff is seeing them succeed at whatever level.

Cooperation - The Vital Partner of Competition in Team Sports

In our never-ending desire to make our Players Competitive we often forget that basketball essence of the teams operation is Cooperation (often called Teamwork). Sometimes the message gets heard incorrectly and we end up with a player who thinks the game revolves around basketball the game is the stage and he is the star actor.

In my writings on different egocentric players, I have been calling him Benny the Braggart. (Yes, there also is a Betty the Braggart) We make the usual pronouncement, There is no I in Team, but Benny still believes that there is M and E in team. All of us have had to deal with that self-centered player who is quick to remind us about the great plays hes made. In dealing with him, direct talk usually doesnt get the job done, so lets come at it from another direction. During some team meetings its a good idea to talk to your players about how each of them contributes to the teams successes.

Coach Hudson took advantage of the opportunity during the last football game. Benny made a big interception which helped your team get back into the game and eventually win. As they head for the locker room after the game, he isnt letting anybody forget what he did how he dragged the team from the jaws of defeat.

Ah, but Coach Hudson is ready to deal with this issue. Lets listen in on his postgame commentary:

Coach: Well, we pulled that one out of the fire. You guys played a great game -- you hung in there until we were able to make some breaks. Let's take a look at a real turning point -- that interception early in the 4th quarter. Who made that interception?

Everyone looks at Benny who has no trouble smiling, waiting for the accolades. However...

Coach: Sandy, what did you do on that play?

Sandy: I got around my blocker and put some pressure on the quarterback.

Coach: Gary, how about you?

Gary: I shut down the tight end -- he never got into his pattern.

Coach: Loren?

Loren: I broke through up the middle and kept the quarterback from stepping up into the pocket.

Coach: Zach?

Zach: Brett and I had the split end covered.

Coach: O.K. and we had the center of the field covered by some of you other backs. O.K., Bobby, where were you?

Bobby: The quarterback got away from Sandy and came my way. I got a piece of his jersey. He pulled away but he saw me coming back to get him again. He just get the pass off.

Coach: Benny?

Benny: The pass was short and wobbly. I stepped in front of the wide receiver and caught the ball.

Coach: And you made a good run back with it. O.K. Let's answer my question now.

Who intercepted that pass?

Sam: It sure looks like a lot of guys did a lot of good work.

Coach: That's right. That is what we call teamwork. We all do our job right and good things happen. The real mark of champions is that they all do their job as well as they can and nobody worries about who gets the credit.

(Notice that Coach Hudson gave Benny creditfor what he did. He deserved it -- He earned it.)

We coaches have to keep improving on our communication skills and on our child development knowledge. Being a My Way or the Highway leader may have worked in the past (It worked temporarily at best) but it doesnt work at all any more. Mutual respect is kind of a good idea along with honest interaction and communication.

Increase Your Chances For Getting In The NBA

Getting drafted in the NBA? For some, it's basketball never ending dream. Some players only want to dream about it while others basketball striving and doing everything they can to end up in the NBA. No one can tell you, for sure, if you'll end up playing there. Not if you're regular guy. I'm assuming you're not LeBron James. We all knew he'll get drafted sooner or later.

But this is about you. Not LeBron James.

Here is what you can concentrate on and work on, to increase your chances for getting drafted in the NBA..

1.) First and foremost, don't perceive this, dream, of playing in the NBA as an opportunity to get famous or rich. If you're not doing this for the love of the game and if you're not 100% devoted to this thing called basketball, you might as well forget it. So, basketball needs to be your top priority. You should actually enjoy when you practice because that's when you're getting better. If you're not getting better, you're getting worse. You can't stay in the middle.

2.) Try to get into some other leagues like ABA, CBA, USLB. Now, I know this is not an easy thing to do, but it's relatively easier. So, once you set your ground there, you'll have more chances to bet noticed by the scouts (professional people who look for talents and players who can make it big in the NBA).

3.) Adapt to your coach. This is a must. If you think that the team you're playing for, is a good one and you think it might eventually get you to some other place, then pay attention to this. You might have your own style of playing. You have your moves and all that. But the coach might see you as a different fit for the team. He might see another potential that you can develop that will help the team even more. A lot of times that happens to be true. So do whatever to coach says. Not only will he tell (if asked) that you're disciplined and you can be coached but you'll get more playing time. More playing time means greater chance to prove how great you are.

And make sure you let your coach know that you're serious about this. Basketball is something you love. You're committed to constant and never ending improvement. That way, even if you are not that good, compared to others, he'll see that great potential you have.

4.) It's a lot better to have such a goal. People who strive for getting better, according to some psychological laws, always perform better. They out-perform other players who are satisfied with "status quo". As the saying goes, "shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll end up between the stars".

Yoga For Basketball

Before you read any further, I need to tell you something that can make a drastic effect on your results from training and the performance on the court:. This one secret can help you come over many obstacles on the court and in life. Take the five words and run with them:

[Let go of your ego]

There are athletes that simply have too big of an ego to do something that may hurt their "rep" or whatever. Check the ego at the door and go do your business.

Now that you are focused, let's get to today's topic: Yoga for Athletes.

I came across this video while searching for yoga exercises. The importance for yoga basketball hidden behind silly society norms like "only women do yoga" or my favourite, "what a loser, he does yoga??" Yoga is known for making the body flexible and the mind calm but it has some benefits that athletes aren't aware of. Injury prevention is the one that strikes me because the fact you athletes spend hours on end training and competing for sport but don't take the necessary steps to take care of that body the rough up.

The following video shows one exercise that is focused on the hip flexor. When I tried this out, I felt an basketball sensation of the stretch.

I should mention that this is only one exercise. There are many different exercises, systems and programs that you can follow. I'm in the process of finding the perfect program for athletes. In the meantime, look at forums, websites, or join a source that is basketball oriented. *HINT

NCAA Men's Basketball - Road to the Final Four Means March Madness For Venues

On Selection Sunday, March 15th, sixty-five teams are selected for the 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship tournament. This begins March Madness and the drive to see who makes it to the Final Four basketball at Ford Field in Detroit.

The NCAA basketball tournament means it's show time for the venues who host the games. Attendance is expected to soar to over 700,000 this year, making March Madness basketball a mini stimulus package for the host city and a chance for venues to shine on a national stage.
