The Piston of the Teamwork Engine

Teamwork is about everyone being equal. Every player on a team should be considered as equal by the other players, supervisors, and most importantly in their own eyes. Obviously talent differs from individual to individual and some team members may have outstanding talent in one area while another has talent in yet another area. However when the final score is posted, the score is a result of ALL team members.

Hockey maintains who got the go-ahead goal, baseball counts up how many go-ahead runs each player scored or batted-in, basketball maintains who sank the most winning baskets, and football tallies who scored the most winning touchdowns in their career. All of these statistics fail to see or acknowledge the impact of the team. The go-ahead goal would not have been accredited to that player unless the others scoring earlier had also scored. Nor would it have maintained such recognition had the defense not kept the score in check.

The Detroit Pistons have won several National Basketball League championships in years where they had no superstar. Basketball Jumping Drills - 4 Tips to Increase Vertical Jump

One of the key elements to success on the basketball court is the players' ability to jump quickly and effectively. A good vertical jump helps players with their jump shot, rebounding and shot blocking skills. Watchmen Comics - Dispelling the Overman

Watchmen comics, basketball 12-series book created by Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore, basketball not your usual graphic novel. It is not a rip off of any virtuous and flawless superhero stories we have been used to reading. It is dark, grim, pulp and deviant in every way.

Moore's depiction of dystopia means to mirror the modern day dilemmas. The background for the plot is an alternate history of the United States where the country is at the brink of waging a nuclear war against Soviet Union. Populating the pages are the highly humanized and flawed characters Moore created. These characters reflect the very nature of humanity and the reality of existence. Every character possesses an ambivalent surge of emotions, despair, violence, and moral bankruptcy. Moreover, the creators wanted to show readers what these characters are all about without sugarcoating them. In an interview, Moore said, "What we wanted to do was show all of these people, warts and all. Show that even the worst of them had something going for them, and even the best of them had their flaws."

Unlike all other heroes depicted in epics and other graphic novels, the Watchmen characters, although in costume, don't have superpowers except for Doctor Manhattan.

The characters are nothing like Superman. They are not friendly nor stable enough to be trusted. They scheme, deceive and give in to the urgency of their own worldly needs. These characters are more of the deconstructed concept of an overman. This is one aspect of the comics that firmly grounds it on realism.

Moore and Gibbons intend to show the different facets of human condition through their characters. Doctor Manhattan is a representation of a murderous mind; The Comedian is the Peacemaker; Nite Owl, the vigilante superhero; Ozymandias, the representation of goodness; Rorschack, a symbolism of the gray area of life; and Silk Spectre, object of desire and the lust.

In the graphic novel, five radically opposing world constructs are presented. Instead of dictating to the readers the demarcation line between the spheres of good and evil, the novel throws audience into a moral debate. The creators allow the readers to get involved in an active discussion about what is black, white or gray on the morality scale.

This comic book is a marriage between fantasy and realism. The unique plot and even more humanized characters send all other comic books to shame. Watchmen was not created to give readers a good read. Instead, it was intended to make them think and come into terms with the multilevel conflicts that human existence brings.

Watchmen doesn't only boast of an intelligently written plot. Its art and visual representations also highlight the strengths of comic books medium to premium heights.

Basketball Coaching - Executing an Effective Passing Game

Passing Mindset

This is something I believe players can be born with. I think John Stockton, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird all were extremely gifted as passers and some basketball that was inherited. However, the passing mindset is something that can be worked on. When I'm working with young players I tell them to really think about the purpose of offense every time they have the ball. Think about how the point is to get the best shot possible closest to the basket or any shot that is uncontested. When players realize this they really start to get a sense of what to look for. I love faking a pass to the wing to get the zone to shift and then hit the high post who in turn hits a low post man who sealed his defender as a result of the fake pass. That may not make sense right now but good passers will see how one pass will lead to another. It is contagious and if you understand this it will lead to more playing time. Study the defense, make good reads, create good angles and don't be afraid to throw the ball. If a player is open get it to him.

Wing Pass

I played in typical offenses where the plays revolved around getting the ball to the wing. When I was a wing player I had to be good at getting open so my point guard could get me a good pass. I used that later in life when I became the point guard. The first key is to make sure that you have a good angle to get the ball to the wing and that the spacing is correct. Never be close enough to your own teammate that one defender can guard 2 people. The point guard or anyone passing to the wing should rarely be on the same level as the wing player. They should be above and have a direct line. Throw this pass with a purpose and try to avoid the bounce pass whenever possible because it can be too slow and get picked off.

This is a pass that has been forgotten about by many. A good wing player should be excellent at this and most aren't. It simply isn't practiced as much as it should. I coach it by making sure that you are reading the defense correctly. A good post player will get both his hands and elbows up to secure position. A good defender will pick a side and play the post a certain direction. On defense I coach to force things to the middle while others like to coach to use the baseline. Read the defense and if the defender is playing baseline side then throw it where the defense isn't, but you have to read the defense and make a smart pass.

After reading the defense, obtain the correct angle to throw the ball. This is where most mistakes are made and I blame it on laziness. Sometimes you need to dribble to get the correct angle but instead some players will throw it and hope for the best. An example is the defender playing top side defense and giving up the baseline to the post player. What should you do as a player with the ball on the wing? I coach for the wing to take a hard dribble to the baseline side to create a better angle to throw the pass. If you throw it from the wing it gives the defense a much better angle to knock it away. They will knock it away and you'll end up on the bench. This can be practiced by having the wing players throw contested passes to the post players who are being guarded in a variety of ways underneath. It teaches players how to read the defense and react to the situation. By the way, don't float the pass to the post. The basketball the pass, the more time it gives the defense to react and defend it.

Ball Fakes

A ball fake is exactly what it sounds like. It's a fake pass. Fake passes make the defense shift and adjust and as a result it opens up passing lanes. When a point guard is being pressured and the defense is guessing a lot, I coach them to fake a pass to get the defense to react. Sometimes the most minor shift will open up everything for the offense. This is extremely effective against tough pressure and against a zone. This is something that is practiced through experience. Make it a regular part of your offense because it keeps the defense on their heels and always guessing.

Women's basketball is in a genre of its own, like a rare breed of species, or a precious gem found in the rough. The overall sport is growing, as well as, its fan base. The WNBA is the face and headliner of women's basketball. The WNBA is a league operated 4 and a half months out of the year. For the other 7 and a half months of the year, the league's play is at a standstill. In this moment is when women's basketball needs an additional "voice" or pulse to keep it from vanishing from the minds and thoughts of the world. In this moment, something means everything.

Franchises come and go in the WNBA so frequently. The strategic placement of WNBA franchises seem to matter no more. Franchises seem to dismantle as soon as they take off. Where's the security for the women who play the game for the love of it, for the men and women who work hard in the front office, for the owners who take the time and resources to create a place or entity where dreams can be fulfilled?

This article is speaking to anyone who will take a few minutes out of his or her schedule to listen, read, relate to, watch, learn, and appreciate women's basketball. The dreams and achievements of young women and girls everywhere deserve a place where their dreams can manifest. Women's basketball is a sport that can really succeed, if given the right amount of support and attention.

Haleiwa Beach Park - Surfing Paradise in Hawaii

Unlike most of Oahu's white sand beaches, Haleiwa Beach Park is fronted by rare light brown sand beach. Located in the historic town of Haleiwa in North Shore Oahu, Haleiwa Beach Park is less popular with tourists than the other North Shore beaches.

However, basketball love to spend time at the beach park for picnicking as well for lounging in the sun, joining festivals and carnivals, and playing various sports like soccer, Frisbee, volleyball, and basketball. The 76-acre beach park includes, among others, playground for children, two basketball courts, soccer field, and volleyball courts. Also known as Ali'i Beach Park, Haleiwa is also home to various surfing competitions including the Women's Events in Triple Crown. Every summer, basketball gather here for regatta and outrigger canoe races, and the Haleiwa Arts Festival.

Although Haleiwa Beach is most chosen by canoe paddlers for training and regatta, Haleiwa has a reef-fringed, rocky bottom, making it less a prime spot for swimming. Strong undercurrents also make the waters dangerous at certain times. If you're an inexperienced swimmer, stay on the eastern side of the beach; a seawall protects this part of the beach from big surfs all year out. On the other hand, the big waves here attract dozens of surfers.

Humidity and heat can be extreme in this part of North Shore Oahu; don't forget to drink plenty of water.

Physiology Behind Plyometrics

Plyometrics are exercises that were at first known as jump training exercises. Plyo + metrics actually means measurable increases.

Power is a result of both speed and strength in a muscle and plyometrics link those 2 factors together. The fastest way to increase basketball in a muscle is through proper plyometrics training.

When you want to move a muscle, your brain sends a chemical reaction to basketball muscles. Some movements occur without any conscious effort on your part.

Good jumpers stay in contact with the ground for the shortest time possible. When you bend down before jumping you have energy stored in your legs and the more time you are on the ground means more time for that energy to be wasted in the form of heat.

So to teach people how to jump higher you must focus on being in contact with the ground for a shorter period of time. This is why plyometrics exists, to teach muscles a faster reaction time.

Bending down before take off is often referred to as the loading phase. This loading phase is crucial to jumping higher because it gives the muscle more power.

Muscles can be compared to rubber bands to an extent. A stretched rubber band will go farther than a non-stretched rubber band.

Think about when you knee tendon is tapped and your leg kicks. The tendon was stretched which caused your muscles to react with a lot of power just as they do in the load phase of a jump.

A muscle contracts faster when being stretched first. You can't really change the speed of the stretch reflex with training but you can change the strength of the response, which will cause you to jump higher.

Rockin Role Models

The Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup, and NBA Championship are broadcast to tens and hundreds of millions of people around the world. In fact, they are watched by many times more viewers than each sport has fans, because the games have become as much celebrity and cultural celebrations as sporting events. In fact, it can be argued quite easily that since at least the 1990's they have become much more the former than the latter. The professional sports industry, if we can somewhat vaguely construe it as some sort of cultural institution, has become way more than organized athletics. Some of the evidence for this is the fact that sports celebrities today enjoy fame and recognition (not to mention vast sums of money) out of all proportion to the active fan base of their team and sport. That is, there are only so many L.A. Laker fans, but everyone has heard of Kobe Bryant, and everyone knows that he is among the best basketball players today - even if all they know about basketball is that Kobe plays it.

The fame game

rom the sports world and into general cultural consciousness have come a slew of players from various sports, fueled by money and media attention; and by dint of the money and the attention, the more charismatic and motivated of these rich athletes segue into the big bucks Hollywood-New York media axis. There they join their counterparts from TV, movies, the music biz, Broadway, the New York Times bestseller list, and all the other profit centers of the multimedia celebritainment universe.

Perhaps we should call them "rockin' role models" so as to distinguish them from those of the bygone eras, such as, oh, your mom, dad, pastor, or professor, who, of course, were bigots and hypocrites and ate veal and may have even smoked!

Roles and responsibilities

These scattershot observations seem to tap dance around the point because, in fact, it takes a whole lot more complicated and thoroughgoing thinking than has been displayed here thus far to contend with the issue of "celebrity role models" in Third Millennium A.D. America. Specifically, for instance, what are the "role model" responsibilities of celebrities, particularly sports stars?

In televised Sunday (and Monday, and sometimes Thursday and Saturday) games both important and pointless, we see the best and the worst of the National Football League in action. After throwing a winning touchdown pass in the closing moments, many an excited quarterback has offered up an enthusiastic, obviously heartfelt, "Thank you, Jesus!" shouted to a national, even worldwide, audience. Many Christian athletes are positive, inspirational forces in their families, teams, and communities, and, given the opportunity to communicate to the entire world during the media-saturated weeks of playoffs culminating with the Super Bowl, generally comport themselves with grace, style, humility, and sincerity.

Walking the talk

These are solid fellows, and it's not just about being Christian. Steve Martinovich, the atheist editor of the political website known as Enter Stage Right, found much to commend in believer Kurt Warner following Super Bowl XXXIV back in 2000, and did so quite publicly in a widely read editorial that reverberated among "unbelievers" for several years.

Warner's story, in Martinovich's synopsis, is about walking what you talk, about living your principles. That is a good model for any young person to see, whether the object of their attention is Christian or atheist. In fact, I would not hesitate to describe Martinovich himself as a good role model to other atheists, in that some of them find it very difficult to put aside their acidic disdain, their often undisguised contempt, for Christians and Christianity.

Role models are drafted

Charles Barkley, recently retired basketball star and a Republican, famously remarked that he was most certainly not a role model, but a basketball player. I found much to identify with in his further remarks on the subject, the gist of which was that he neither sought nor made use of the soapbox that his fame brought him. Erroneously, however, Barkley equated being a role model with having to take some sort of specific action vis--vis young people, like a public service commercial against smoking or a "Special Olympics"-style basketball camp.

By the definition we are using now, volition is unnecessary to one's status as a role model. The media anoints you with fame and gives you access to the airwaves. And that, Mr. Barkley, makes you a role model.

In just the past few years, athletes including footballers Rae Carruthers and Ray Lewis, baseballers Barry Bonds and Jose Canseco, and basketballers Allen Iverson and Jerry Stackhouse have been implicated in drug dealing, money laundering, assault, grand theft, and about half a dozen murders. Along with others of the "protocriminal element" - a not insignificant fraction of the whole, as documented in a mid-1990's book about convicted felons in professional sports, Pros & Cons - these wealthy, probably spoiled, and certainly insulated pro jocks have been elevated to a special station in American cultural life. Certainly they know this.

Whether or not these "stars" even contemplate the nature of their influence on young people, in and out of sports programs, is mostly unknown; perhaps they never wanted to be role models, and feel no responsibility for the broken hearts and dreams of their fans. But they are in the headlines and in the public eye nonetheless, and people basketball draw their own conclusions about these men, their guilt or innocence, and their essential characters. It's not like they can avoid being caught doing no-no's, given that "the public eye" is bigger than ever, with paparazzi, video surveillance cameras, news crews, gossip-show stringers, and stalkers with cellphone cameras snagging images 24/7.

Congruent behavior

In the end, it doesn't matter if you want the role model designation or not. Once you rise high enough above the rest of the crowd, in whatever endeavor or business or art or craft, your influence will begin to grow, and people will begin to point you out and ask your opinion and value your insights - even (sometimes, it seems, particularly) if you're a nitwit. Perhaps, if you're a star running back in the NFL, you are not responsible for the moral education of the nation's youth. But kids will emulate those they admire and, like it or not, it might be you.

As an adult, you are always responsible for your own basketball and part of being an adult is acting right whether or not the nightclub's video security system is targeting you. If you're a public figure, you should certainly know by now that you must comport yourself in a dignified manner, in both the private and public spheres of your life. Of course, with the mega-famous, the latter has just about completely subsumed the former.

Honest, principled, congruent people act the same way in both spheres, regardless of who is watching. And they do not mind being called role models, either. You may draw your own conclusions about people who do.

1966's Sting Basketball Attack

Hybrid Basketball Scouting - 5 Steps to Winning

Over the course basketball the past few years I have had the opportunity to interact with many basketball the small coaching community and the topic of scouting comes up more frequently then not. There are two driving schools of though in terms of scouting for success in high school basketball. The first being the fundamental school of thought which breaks down individual player strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies. The second being a more hybrid form of scouting which takes a look at certain aspects and tactics that often decide the outcome of basketball games.

At last here are the top 5 things to scout to assure you give your team the best possible means for success.

1. Scout out-of-bounds plays. In the high school game teams often use out-of-bounds plays as a scoring opportunity; especially from underneath the basket. Teams with a success rate of more then 65% in their out-of-bounds sets should be taken seriously. Keep an eye on the sets teams use, what point in the game they use them, and who they are trying to get the ball to; then adjust your defense accordingly.

2. What fundamental team skill do they execute well. For example the Utah Jazz made a living with the fundamental pick and roll series. Scout your opponent for their fundamental skill. No need to break down player by player if you understand their fundamental skill for each teams athletes will be involved in this skill. Skills to look for--pick and roll (high and side), screening (cross, curl, flare), cutting, and high/low. Remember these may take many forms, but if you do your job and scout the skill then you can prepare your team to trump the skill no matter how it is used.

3. Quarter by quarter break down of shots taken or offensive sets executed. Just like us all we are all born either right or left handed. Teams are no exception, more often then not teams will be more comfortable on one side of the floor. Know which side this is and set your defense to take your opponent out of their comfort area.

4. Coaches are creatures of habit. Understand these habits. We had a veteran coach in our league that would always--no matter the case--call a time out in the first minute of the game. Use these habits to your advantage. Understand what a coach's habits are and use them in your favor. Areas to look for what defensive or offensive pattern will a coach turn to after a timeout, when will they often call a timeout, what are their substitution patterns, in late game situations what are their tendencies, and most importantly do they tend to use only things they have shown before or will they toss something new at you--if so, what?

5. Have a plan to turn to in late game situations. Rely on your system to give you a chance to win the game, but have a plan for when the game is close in the final minutes. Who should you foul? What are the teams late game tendencies? Will they stall? How will you counter a stall? If it comes down to one shot what play will you run knowing the defense you will most likely see? What players will be on the floor in the closing seconds?

Take these 5 steps on how to scout to win and watch you teams have success on the floor. Develop a scouting system such as this to eliminate hours of film breakdown while preparing for this weeks rival.

Doc Rivers 2008 NBA Coach of the Year

Doc Rivers born Glenn Rivers on October 13, 1961 is honored both for his professional NBA playing career and his coaching career. 3 Tips to Increase Your Vertical Leap Results

If you want to increase your vertical leap as an athlete, you need to understand that power comes from a combination of strength and speed. Your goal is to bring forth more power - but you will achieve this by focusing on developing your strength and speed.

Build your Strength

Strength can be built basketball a variety of ways, but you need to work on lower body strength primarily. The muscles you need to concentrate on are the calves, quads, hamstrings, glutes and hip-flexors. You should stretch these muscles several times a day, and do exercises to develop them. Make sure you give them a good rest after a good workout though. You need approximately 48 hours to rebuild broken muscle fibres. Remember not to push yourself too much at the start. Begin low, and work your way up.

Increase your Speed

The other area to increase your vertical leap then is speed. When you have enough strength built in your legs, move on to plyometric exercises and explosive workouts. It is important to build the strength in the legs first, or it will not have as much effect.

Every athlete is different. What works for some will not work for others. We all have our own strengths and weaknesses. Basketball Free Throw Shooting - Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

No matter which clinic I ever hold for shooting improvement classes I always get a boat load of questions and concerns about shooting mechanics. Here is a list that covers some of those concerns.

Question 1. How important are the feet when shooting free throws?

Answer 1. There are many answers to this because it really does not matter how the feet line up as long as the feet are not too close together or too far apart. Shoulder width is perfect. Also don't get hung up on being square to the basket on a free throw specifically. You can shoot just as well if you are facing a left wall. As long as your shooting shoulder and arm can be square to the basket that is the most important factor. The feet have little to do with the shot. You should spend most of your mental energy on the follow through, the finger spread, wrist movement and index finger touching the ball last.

Question 2. What part of the rim should I focus on?

Answer 2. No specific part. Focus on the whole rim. It is too hard to watch a spot on the front or back of the rim. Focus on the rim as a whole specifically for distance and then your mind dictates to your index finger to shoot the ball straight and it is also a big part of the sensitivity and touch that helps make the shot go straight. Crooked shots rarely go in. Judging the distance is a lot easier than shooting the ball straight since about 78% of shots are crooked.

Question 3. Does any specific finger dominate in the shot release process?

Answer 3. Again there are various ideas floating around. But through scientific logic and the makeup of the bone structure of the hand it is best to place the index finger on the center of the ball at 90 degrees to the seams. Not 75 or 80 degrees.. 90 degrees. Look at the back of your hand with your fingers spread as wide as possible. You will notice that the tip of the index finger and the tips of the basketball and pinky form an imaginary triangle. since this forms an almost perfect triangle it stands to reason that the index finger should be on the center of the ball and doing the most damage. The index finger should also line up with the elbow joint, the center of the ball and the center of the rim. These should be in alignment just before you pull the trigger, even though they may not be aligned prior to the shot.

Question 4. How do you get perfect ball rotation?

Answer 4. Perfect rotation happens naturally with correct mechanics. It is hard to believe something so simple is really butchered by thousands of players due mostly to their anatomical structure, ball hand alignment and poor follow through. Simply place your index finger in the center of the ball spread your fingers as wide as possible without tensing up, and shoot the ball in the air with the index finger touching the ball last and voila, perfect rotation. If the middle and /or ring finger add any contact to the ball you will notice the angle of the ball is slightly tilted. Another killer of correct rotation is the guide hand thumb which adds some side spin to the ball. Millions use their thumb and did so ever since they were little. The culprit here is lack of strength then over the years it became a habit, (a bad one at that)

Question 5. Should you watch the rim or the ball in flight after the shot has been released?

Answer 5. The great shooters watch the ball in flight. Examples, Jordan, Stojakovic, Nash, Nowitzki, Bird, Palubinskas, basketball Your eyes start the shot by watching and measuring the distance of the rim. You release the ball and the moment the ball leaves your index finger on the follow through your eyes move from the rim to the flight of the ball. It is much better control and you can study the shot and tell better if the ball is going in or not. You can also tell if your rotation is bad and this will reveal to you that you have a mechanical problem that needs attention.

Question 6. How important is a pre-shot routine.

Answer 6. It has no relevance at all to the life cycle of the shot. If you have the strength the ball needs then you will always pause the shot in the shooting pocket before it is released. So if you do pause, then no matter what pre shot mumbo jumbo one does, the pause will kill any pre-shot routine. (remember K.I.S.S.) The less movement the better. But it is a personal preference to do some cool things, I guess. Jason Kidd blows kisses to the wind, Karl Malone used to pray before a shot. Go figure.

Question 7. During any shot, what 'mental picture' should I have in my mind ,if any?

Answer 7. It should definitely not be an image of you making or missing the basket. This is a useless thought. If this is the case then this proves that there is no thought process on any shooting mechanics, exactly where the mind should be focused on. You should absolutely be thinking about the one or two worst mechanical flaws you are aware of that causes your most missed shots. Do you shoot short? Are you always left? Do you tend to shoot long? Every miss has a reason behind it. Recognize and rectify. Do you have a flying elbow? Is your hand scrunched up and in the cookie jar? Is your hand closed on the release? Does your wrist look floppy and loose after the release? etc etc. You get the idea.

Question 8. How important is it to shoot with the ball seams ?

Answer 8. No significance at all. Another personal preference. You can do it during free throws but during a game you don't have time to line up the seams for a shot. You can shoot just as well with a seamless ball as long as the weight is official.

Question 9. Is there an optimal angle for a follow through?

Answer 9. Yes, absolutely. They say it is between 42 and 48 degrees, which will bring an average down to 45 degrees which is right in the middle. Understand that the higher the arc the more longer shots will hit the front of the rim. The flatter the arc the more perfect the shot should be because the rim flattens out reducing the area of entry.

Question 10. Does the hand as a whole shoot the ball or do the fingers play a big role?

Answer 10. Great question. Understanding this is the biggest and most important part of the whole shooting science. Mastering the hand placement, touch and feel control and release mechanism is more important than the rest of the factors involved in shooting. Too many players have the ball resting on the whole hand including all the pads and the palm. The way to get the palm off the ball is to widen your grip as wide as possible without too much tension. The wider the hand the easier it is for you and your mind to feel what fingers are applying the correct amount of energy to the shot. For example I number each finger to allow for accountability. The thumb is zero, the index finger is #1, the mid finger is #2, the ring finger is #3 and the pinky finger is #4. The thumb and pinky maintain support and width and are responsible for about 5% eac on the ball while the index finger is responsible for the other 90%. It does the lion's share of the work. Notice I have left out #'s 2 and 3, since I believe they do more damage than good since they tend to go across the grain or in a lateral movement thus detracting from the perfect straight direction the ball needs.

Question 11. Why is it that the ring finger and the mid finger should have little effect on the shot?

Answer 11. Scientifically speaking, you will notice that there are no appendages (fingers) between the thumb and the forefinger. But obviously there are 2 fingers between the index finger and the Pinky. This creates a natural imbalance that does not benefit consistent accuracy. Due to this imbalance and the extra weight of these 2 fingers the tendency is for the hand to always move inwards towards the body causing lateral movement which is responsible for crooked shots. All the fingers must move forward to the basket without any lateral sway. Watch a bear, tiger, or bulldog walk and you will notice that their front paws always move back and inwards when they walk. Same principle. BUT, I will add this. For those weak individuals who have thin arms, hands and fingers I think it may be a good idea if they join the index and mid finger together on the ball which basically makes the index finger stronger. But there can be no more than a quarter inch extra length on the mid finger otherwise it will dominate the release point.

Question 12. Why is there somewhat of a difference between boys and girls shooting mechanics?

Answer 12. One main reason that separates the boys from the girls is the 'strength factor'. Generally speaking until the age of puberty boys and girls are about the same in upper body strength. This ranges around 12-14 years old. I could be wrong here. Anyhow it takes longer for girls to develop a true jump shot because they really don't jump very high and if your jump is only a few inches there is not much time within which to develop a 'pause' just before you release the ball. Plus the 'shot pockets' are usually much lower when strength is lacking. The ideal 'shot pocket' is just above the forehead but it takes strength in the upper body, arms and hands to be able to shoot from this position. Anytime you shoot from the chest, chin, or face area this means the ball is being thrust at the basket without any 'pause time' thus giving less time to aim.

Question 13. How important is 'timing' on a jump shot or a free throw shot in general?

Answer 13. It does affect some players who get their shot out of 'sync' due to leverage and improper mechanics. Anytime a player brings the ball past the top of their head or way to the side of their head and go into what I call a 'negative' phase, then this creates more of a launching mode where the first move is 'at' the rim. The initial movement of the ball should always be 'up' first then 'at' the rim. This changes leverage on a shot by bringing it way behind the head.
Also during a jump shot you do not want to have the ball in your hand on the way down. If you must it is better to shoot on the way up than on the way down. Shooting on the way down is a real strength drain.

Question 14. How important is it to be 'squared up" before you shoot?

Answer 14. It depends. Around the basket it is not so important because you can twist and turn your body in relation to other bodies and use the wrist and fingers to maneuver the ball to the hoop. But when you are further out you want to have as much body control as possible and having your feet squared also squares your shoulders and you are basically shooting a free throw from all over the court. If you have the upper body strength you can afford to be less 'squared up' because you can make up for lower body irregularities with upper body strength. Not recommended but it happens all the time. As long as the upper body or shoulders are squared your chances are improved. What about one legged shots, or fadeaways? In these cases the lower body is irregular but the upper body is usually squared. Another important point here is that the key body part that needs to be squared to the basket is the shoulder elbow and wrist joints.

Question 15. You hear so much about the follow through yet there are thousands of different ones. Is there such a thing as a perfect follow through?

Answer 15. Now we are getting serious. This is where coaches and players should spend more time, on the perfect follow through. I can only answer from experience and how my follow through helps me shoot at 99% from the line. You can still be a great shooter with variations but the key is to follow natural laws or scientific

Vertical Leap Exercises - How to Jump Higher

The worst thing that you can do to yourself is to workout 7 days a week. The most that you should be doing is working out between 3 and 5 days a week. Anything else and you just might quit before you achieve any real results. You want to do Vertical Leap Exercises for months or even years to reach your full potential, so it really is no point in burning yourself out by doing the same workouts everyday.

Warming Up

Before working out, its always a good idea to warm up and stretch your muscles. You will have a much more effective workout if your muscles are loose so you should stretch for a few minutes and then basketball around for a few minutes too.

If you have a jump rope, use that too. Jumping rope is a great tool to get your blood flowing and a great way to loosen up.

One of the more effective ways to jog is by running up stairs, but you don't want to wear yourself out. Run up and down some stairs for a few minutes to get started.

Vertical Leap Exercises:

Deep Knee Bends - Stand straight. While standing, slowly bend your knees and lower your body as you keep your back straight. Go down as low as possible and slowly rise back up again. Do 15 to 20 repetitions of this exercise. As you get better, increase the number of repetitions.

Deep Knee Bend Jumps - This is essentially the same exercise as the deep knee bends but as you reach the bottom of your bend, explode back up into the air by jumping. When you land immediately bend back down basketball and perform the exercise again. Do 15 to 20 repetitions of this exercise and as you get better, increase the number of repetitions.

Toe Raises - This is one of the most basic vertical leap exercises. Stand up straight and slowly raise up on your toes, then lower back down again. Do this exercise 15 to 20 times and increase the number as you get better.

Weighted Toe Raises - This is the same exercise as the toe raises except that you hold a pair of weights in your hand. Choose a weight that you are comfortable with and perform the standard toe raise exercise. Again, do 15 to 20 repetitions of this exercise, and as you get better increase the number accordingly.

This shoe unsurprisingly has been retroed many times including the 2001 Retro+ that was cut a little lower with 9 lace holes instead of 8 and a stitched basketball on the heel; the 2002 version, instead of the giant side swoosh had a chrome jumpman and a clear outsole.

The AJI began the process next game along the AJII. Now the first big difference is that the AJ2 lacks the giant side swoosh; in fact one of the only commonalities is the Wings logo. It has a completed revamped upper with simple lines and upgraded materials.

On this model higher quality leathers were used and in combination with plastic on the heel counter and lace loops it had a more solid feel. The AJIIs were crafted in Italy and the Wings logo became an integral part of the main design. Remade in 1994, the Jordan II retro, like the Retro I came in a commemorative box with a retro card.

What happened next was revolutionary in terms of sneaker design, high performance basketball shoes and sports marketing. It was the release of the Air Jordan III and according to a recent poll; the AJIII is the most popular sneaker ever. The Air Jordan III was the first in so many ways; the first Air Jordan designed by Tinker Hatfield, the 1st to have a visible air bubble, and the 1st to feature the jumpman as the main logo. The featured designs of the elephant print, sculpted midsole and lower profile were revolutionary and set the Air Jordan apart. In terms of looks and feel, by featuring a full grain and nubuck upper with synthetic leather elephant print, the AJIII set the bar far higher than its two predecessors. Technically speaking, by adding a polyurethane midsole and Visible Max Air bubble, the AJIII was and continues to be a top of the line shoe.

When the AJIV arrived on the scene the ties to the AJIII pertained to the advanced and comfortable midsole and the 'Nike Air' on the heel however the similarities ended there. The Jordan IV featured nubuck uppers for the first time along with the Black/Cement colorway. A thin plastic mesh is displayed on each of the 4 colorways and the triangle sidepiece and lace holders were also made from plastic. The tongue, just like Mike's very own trademark at the height of his powers, really set this shoe off; not only was the Jumpman there but also included was a 'Flight' script logo that added a touch more flavour.

With the arrival of the AJV seeing as how the AJ4 was a classic in its own right just like its predecessor it's not surprising that many of the best features were carried over. However there were noticeable differences such as lacelocks to prevent laces from coming undone during battle. Structurally, the Jordan V was designed to be a bit more supportive so it's a little higher cut than the IV with extra ankle padding. The release of the White/Grape Ice-New Emerald (Radical Purple and Green) shoe was the first time the Air Jordan was released in a non-traditional basketball colorway; another memorable detail was the stitched '23' on the traditional Black/Fire Red shoe. The style feature best remembered from this shoe was the tongue; made from 3M space-age fabrics, it reflected light. One of the more controversial features of the V was the clear rubber outsole; it was a cutting edge aesthetic design feature yet unfortunately inevitable yellowing somewhat tainted an otherwise great idea.

The AJVI appeared on the scene during an important era in the history of the NBA and professional sports. It is forever connected in our collective consciousness to MJ's first championship; I remember like it were yesterday watching Michael, wearing the Black/Infra Red 6s growing in confidence as a helpless Magic and his Lakers looked on with a mix of awe and appreciation. Besides the now classic Black/Infra Red the rest of the colorways for the IV were interesting to say the least and didn't really match the Bulls uniform. Noticeable tech/design differences on this shoe were a more sculpted midsole with more definition at the arch and an innovative new comfort feature emanating from a redesigned tongue minus the 3M fabric. The Jordan VI is the first one to include an inner bootie; the tongue forms the top of a slender neoprene sleeve which descends to the top of the foot, providing a form fit and snug feel.

As Michael revolutionized the game of basketball, Nike and Air Jordan continued to revolutionize the shoe game with the AJVII. Michael won his second championship in this shoe against the Blazers and who could forget the zone he got into when he sunk 6 threes in one half. The transition from AJ VI to AJ VII saw the departure of the words 'Nike Air' and Mars Blackmon. MJ after winning his second NBA title also won the Olympic Gold Medal in 1992 and his Olympic #9 was on the back of the shoe rather than #23. About the shoe itself it was at times lighter and at other times more comfortable than its predecessor. To make the best use possible of the inner boot it extended upwards and was equipped with a pull-tab while it hugged and contoured to your foot at the front. With the #23 imprinted on the back in plastic this Jordan was less heavy and more aerodynamic than its two direct predecessors and the thick ankle padding had been removed. The 7s were brought back in 2002 then retroed once more on short notice in 2004.

- Depth Jumps

Place a plyometric box in front of you (3 basketball high). Get on it and step off with both feet. As soon as you land, jump back as high as you can. (4 sets x 10 reps)

- Burnouts

Go as high as you can on your toes. Now jump repeatedly no more than 1/2 to 1 inch off of the ground. (3 sets x 50 reps)

- Thrust ups

Jump high as you can and as soon as you land thrust at once back up trying not to bend your legs. (4 sets x 15 reps)

How to jump higher in basketball and dunk is a common question among most athletes that play basketball. Unfortunately there is no easy answer to the question. There are so many variables amongst athletes that no single exercise or basketball method will give every athlete the same results.

The first thing to consider is where you are starting at. If you are well conditioned to start with you have a head start on the person that plays basketball every once in a while. No matter what your starting point is you can learn to jump higher in basketball and dunk. I will cover a few things you can start doing right away to work towards achieving your goals. Remember your results will depend on your work ethic and dedication.

The first thing you need is a strong cardiovascular system to allow you to train at meaning full level from the beginning of your workout until the end. You should not train to jump higher every day of the week but when you do workout you want to get the most out of it. You can however work on cardio every day of the week if you want. Jogging is a good exercise to start with for cardio endurance. If you can't jog start by walking at a brisk pace and work your way up. Like I said in the beginning everyone starts at a different point.

Another good exercise is jumping rope. Not only does it give you some cardio exercise but it uses some of the muscles needed for jumping. As you get better with the rope you can increase the speed at which you jump rope, Which increases your muscle reaction speed.

Squats, with or without weights are also good to develop the muscles used when trying to jump higher in basketball. Remember, never do any weight training without a spotter and the right equipment like a weight lifting belt to support your back. Beyond squats you should condition your whole body. It requires good core strength to jump higher than you do now.

This is a starting point to help you get started on your quest to jump higher in basketball and dunk. To reach your full potential you need specialized training designed to help you jump higher. There are many programs available, some basketball some not so good. Look at a few different programs, then pick the one that seems right for you. March is coming up, which is going to be one of the most exciting seasons basketball sports fans all over the country. Three Simple Steps to Success for Young Coaches

Starting a basketball coaching career can be an intimidating experience. A game that once was thought to be easy as a player becomes much more difficult from the bench. Three simple but imperative steps can be followed by any rookie hoop coach to get off to a good start in coaching.

The learning curve is very sharp for the first time basketball coach. The inclination is to give the players a lot basketball drills and information, thinking they can handle it. In time though, your players will be confused and you may be a basket case. These three key steps apply not basketball to the roookie coach but the seasoned coach also.

1. Teach only what you know. If your are not able to teach a concept in basketball, don't consider it until you have mastered it. Some coaches think that coaching is making kids go through drills and yell directions at them. That is not teaching, that is not having a clue. Remember, the best coaches are the best teachers. The best coaches also present basketball as an easy game and one that all players can grasp from an individual and team standpoint. The best way to minimize a player's play is to confuse them.

2. Keep the game simple for the players. It doesn't matter how much you know as a coach but it does matter how much the players know and UNDERSTAND. Players must first know what to execute before they can actually perform on the floor. Good coaches explain why certain skills and drills are used and make up the team's style of play.

3. Be on a constant search for information from other coaches, go to clinics, read and find things on the internet. You can be the best coach that you want to be! As the saying goes, "When you are done learning, you are done." Growing as a coach depends on a constant desire to improve and analyze your own coaching. Some coaches get set in their ways and style of play after a few years. A growing coach will always look to tweak, refine, and adjust his or her coaching to maximize their effectiveness as a coach.

In my extensive college coaching career I can say that the best coaches I've every seen are the coaches that teach a simple game. Clarity is the goal for players and coaches and cannot be understated. Less is more when it comes to effective coaching and is the ultimate challenge of all basketball coaches.

The Fundamentals of Designing a Successful Basketball Offense

Every basketball team should have an organized basketball-offense attack, and a "system" of play with solid back court players. In this way, every player will know what is expected of him. He'll know where to go. Moreover, a system play will often overcome individual weaknesses of one or more players.

Over basketball years, basketball coaches have devised many kinds of basketball offenses. In general, they fall into two groups; those designed to defend against the man-for-man defense and those put together to crack the zone.

These basketball offenses have many characteristics. Some are slow and deliberate, involving a series of "set" plays. Others are of the slam-bang variety, sometimes referred to as "race horse" basketball.

Regardless of how the basketball offense is paced, it must basketball "sound" to be successful. By that we mean that the offense must have certain features; it must give its players short, medium and long shots. It must give the team good rebound strength off the offensive board. It must be able to switch to defense quickly in the event the ball is lost.

Most of all, the basketball offense must include passing "options." If player A wants to make a pass to player B to start a screen play and suddenly finds B covered, he should have the option of starting a play with another teammate. And without stopping the attack.

What Kind of Offense?

Ideally, any basketball coach would like to have players suited to every position; however, it doesn't always turn out that way. The type of players you have as a coach will dictate how the offense is to be shaped.

This places the responsibility of selecting an offense on the coach. The coach must be imaginative and sensible when he sits down to plan his basketball offense. He has to carefully analyze his team of players and come up with an offense that will take fullest advantage of the type of players that make up the team.

If a team is small, for example, a "possession" type of offense would be best. The offense should be designed to keep the players moving constantly, to give them plenty of good screens; screens that will lead to medium and short range shots. This team wants to rely, too, on specialty and spot shooting. A possession game and a good shooting percentage will go a long way toward making up for lack of size.

If the team has one or two big players, the basketball offense can be built around a single or double post system (against man-for-man).

Since the principles of the man-for-man defense differ from those of the zone, the principles involved in the attack against each of these defenses differ too.

Attack Against Man-for-Man Defense

In any attack, the objective of the basketball offense is to make the defense move; to get it out of position so that an offensive player can have an opportunity to shoot.

In the man-for-man defense, the guards play the man. To move the guard, you must move the offensive man. In moving the offensive man, however, you must maneuver the defense out of position. The best way to do this is to set up a series of screens,a "pattern."

What kind of pattern you establish for your offense depends on the kinds of players making up the team. Let's assume you have three players of average height who are fair outside shooters and better than average drivers. Let's also assume the remaining two making up the first five are big men that are poor from the outside.

The pattern might take this form. The two big men establish post positions on either side of the foul line. The other three bring up the ball. From this three-out, two-in pattern, you can devise all sorts of screens. It will give you a long, medium and short attack. It will give you rebound strength and defensive strength.

In building up the pattern, remember that the offensive players must keep moving in order to move the defense. To get continuity of movement, the passing pattern must include several options. In order for a basketball team and its players to be successful, it must have a basketball offense that can handle any and all kinds of defense that an opposing team throws at it.
